This is from the PreSonus Blog:

If you registered Studio One 2 between April 1, 2015 and May 20, 2015, we will upgrade you for FREE.
We understand that it sucks when you put your hard-earned money down on something only to have the new model come out a short time later. As such, we’re offering a grace period that extends back to April 1, 2015. If you registered Studio One between April 1, 2015 and May 20, 2015, we’ll upgrade you to Studio One 3 at no charge. Simply log into your my.presonus.com account after the launch on May 20th, and you will find a Studio One 3 notification that will lead you to your free upgrade.”

If you received Studio One Artist as a pack-in with one of our hardware products, simply register the product at my.presonus.com. Instead of receiving Studio One Artist 2 in your account, you will get Studio One Artist 3, automagically.

That's not a very long grace period in my opinion, considering Studio One 2 came out in 2011.

All I see in my account is a new product key.

Is that it?

That IS a very short grace period. I just purchased 2.6 approx 90 days ago. I realize that they could never come up with a date that would satisfy everyone, but the time lapse since the last major update has been a while so the grace period is not so full of "grace". :hunf:

People will always complain... Presonus is here to make money. Yet, they were generous enough to not charge us for .5 versions. Just go and look at Cubase users... or better how much Avid folks have to pay!

Is there an upgrade pricing? I am not looking to get it free but I didn't see an upgrade price.

I purchased S1 v2.6.3 last July, about 10 months ago. The current v2 release is v2.6.5. So, in 10 months, there were 2 point releases (bug fixes). That's it. And I'm supposed to pay the same upgrade price as someone who bought v1?

Not a chance.

Very, very disappointed.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, (OK, I'll W it)...won't get fooled again.

I now have ZERO confidence that PreSonus will take care of their existing customers. I now consider my 44VSL to be a boat anchor. The driver has NEVER worked for me with MY setup. What's different about mine? An iLok for my Slate Digital plugins. The driver just wipes it out of existence, just by being loaded at startup...I don't even need to load S1 or Reaper.

The silver lining?

I've now come to closure and can, unhappily but confidently, write off my PreSonus investment as a complete loss. I'm not enough of an a$$ to sell my 44VSL to some unsuspecting soul. I couldn't live with myself.

Adios, muchachos y muchachas!

P.S. Now I'm worried about my Notion 5 investment. Sheesh. What lousy thoughts to go to bed on.

Hmm... so if the grace period was within your purchase date... then you'd be happy? And if so, then there would be someone else bitching about wanting a grace period of 100 days, then another for 4 months, 5 months, etc.. Yep life isn't always fair and we all won't be happy all the time.

What you call "bitching" I call voicing my opinion. I also acknowledged that there's no way for a software company to make everyone happy.

I would guess that's probably one reason most companies keep mum on new release info until the very last moment so sales don't stagnate and they can maintain the narrowest grace period as possible. As most of us probably do, I purchase and maintain the current versions of a lot of fairly high end software. IMO this grace period is on the skimpy side.

You could have waited since Version 1 and receive Version 3 for the same price that someone who kept up with upgrades and owns Version 2.X or above. Is there any part of that doesn't feel inequitable? I am really mystified as to how this doesn't warrant a second look by PreSonus as to the fairness of their upgrade policy.

Equitable or not, the only other choices would be:

1. Require them to upgrade to 2.0 first. This is not possible anymore since 2.0 is not available anymore.

2. Require them to pay the cost of both upgrades. That would be $298 assuming the v1 to v2 upgrade was also $149. The full price of v3 is only $399 so that doesn't seem right. Also, they've never benefited from using 2.0 except for the things that are still in 3.0. So they've lost out on 3 1/2 years of cool stuff. This pricing for them may be a way for PreSonus to entice old customers to come back.

I just don't get the opposition to the pricing. I doubt there are many people that would still have v1 that would now out of the blue want v3 anyway.

For all of my complaining about the upgrade pricing, I will be paying for a upgrade. I just think that there needs to be considerably more forethought into the structure of upgrade pricing.

As corny as it sounds, "fairness" is a concept that runs deep through American culture. One person's perception of fairness is rarely equitable to another's. If I happily tag along the upgrade path with my wallet and someone who hasn't been as "loyal" as myself comes along and is able to pay the same price then fairness goes out the window.

I understand. There are also people that will get educational discounts and use the software for commercial gain, which is against the educational license terms. And there are some who will share one of their 5 activations with a friend which is a violation of the licensing terms. None of that is fair, either.

I guarantee they thought long and hard on the pricing. They don't make those decisions on a whim.
