So, mine seems to not be starting with sound at all.

Presonus say it is a hardware issue and that i should take the mixer to get fixed......in London, 400 miles away :(

Hi everybody!
I have been using my 16.0.2 for almost 5 years now, take it out to the outside world 3-4 times/year, it works as a stand-alone most of the time, very rarely do I connect it to my MacBook. Power comes from a UPS (which also powers everything else in my living-room-studio, keyboards, drum machines, amps, rack stuff etc). The board and the rest of the equipment stay powered 24/7 (except the exceptional exception), because I would have to switch on and of half a dozen times per day, which isn't that good for PSUs and other electronics.

Yesterday night, I switched on the phantom power to a pair of mics, I noticed some disturbing hum. Unplugging, replugging the mics, switching phantom on and off didn't change a thing (well, with phantom off, I didn't have the hum anymore, of course)
I decided to switch off the mixer, waited for 5 minutes, powered up again... And no output whatsoever (I use phones and monitor out as a general rule, my little PA is barely used). I could see input signals and output levels, but no sound from phones, monitor or main. I also noticed the two last strips (13/14 and 15/16) were unresponsive. I connected the Mac, performed a factory reset, to no avail. I also switched from 48 to 44.1 and back a few times, no change.
Considering the hum, I suspected a power supply issue, so I opened the mixer and checked the PSU for obvious damage. The only thing I found was capacitor C47 (3300mF/10V) with a slightly bulging top. I measured all the voltages (no other boards connected), they seem OK. With the other circuits (except the ones in the to half of the mixer) connected, the heatsink with the Voltage regulators was quite hot. I will replace that capacitor on monday.
Is there something I should investigate further? No output at all (no computer involved), and two dead inputs (strips 11 and 12), plus a humming Phantom.
Thanks for your reply
Regards

Michel

Almost 50,000 hours? Amazing, that your 16.0.2 made it. Give it a repair or replace it. There is a USB version available and many other mixers from PreSonus. It's time for a change...

4.5 years @ 8.760hrs/yr, that's around 39.000 hrs. Some 11.000 to go, then.

Seriously, I'm quite happy with this board. It's the first time it has let me down, and it seems to be a PSU problem.
I found a broken wire on a connector to the converter board, I will replace the connector tomorrow. These things cost less than a euro, just like the capacitor. Worth a try.
If this doesn't work, I will send it to a repair centre, get a quotation and decide. It's wrong to replace equipment that satisfies my needs. If I were to replace it, I think I would go for a larger model, 24 inputs or more. But the 12 strips are adequate for my current use, and I can't afford to spend 2.000+ euro for the moment.

Did you repair the wire or capacitor? Did you solve the problem?

I did replace the capacitor and hardwired the cable (couldn't find the connector, 7 poles at 1/20"). But this didn't solve the problem. The board powers up, but stalls at "waiting". Possibly my soldering work wasn't well done, my eyesight isn't what it used to be.
I will reopen the mixer or I might have it repaired at some point, I'm a little short on cash now.
I did buy a 24.4.2 in mint condition, paid 900 euro including an unused flight case.

“Waiting” means that it awaits the dsp to boot up. Check the connections to the dsp pcb. If your flash memory is worn out you’ll get the same condition since it then can’t download the dsp code.

After such problem, which could occur on live perfomance, you bought Presonus products again???

Any electronic (or other) device will eventually break down. This can happen at any time. I have used lots of other equipment (audio and other), and it has happened. So what?
Would you never buy a brand of car again because yours broke down?

The "best" equipment is not a guarantee for 100% reliability. Note that devices will only break down when you use them. This mixer has been used in my home studio, hardly ever on other locations, power was almost permanently on, meaning it ran for approximately 40.000 hours. That's quite reliable, I would say.

Thanks for this very useful information. When I will have the time to reopen the board, I will investigate this. Or I will have someone do it for me ;)

I meant that problem with sound out is seen on much mixers. And I will see if they repair it for free. Because it is known problem... Also, I'm from Russian Federation, I'm not sure I could get reliable service and mostly not reasonable price...
As for me I used it on one live show and it disturbes me from the first show!

From what I've read the. 5v resistors go bad. I just started messing with my 16.0 2 today.channels 1-12 are not working. Ipluged itin and they work. I then updated firmware and once board turned of and back on they didnot work. I'm confused and pissed off as presonus is real slow returning my email messages. All i needro know is what their bench fee is to fix my board.

My 16.0.2 recently having issue with no sound coming out from any port (main, monitor, phone, aux). It turned out there is a bad 5v voltage regulator on the DSP board. I replaced it and the problem solved. That saved me about $300 to have Presonus to fix it. Let's see how long it last.

I'm having the SAME PROBLEM and it's been driving me insane! The board works fine one moment, the next time I turn it on I get NO SIGNAL from any of the inputs. I read that enabling the firewire would mute all inputs unless plugged into Universal Control so I've disabled the firewire, unplugged and let sit. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! SO FRUSTRATING!!! I'm only using this as a backup but am now concerned about the two Quantums I purchased last year... Am I going to have similar problems?

I read on this thread about replacing the 5v resistor; Is that an easy thing to do? HELP!!!

Notice a few having some problem with 16.0.2. I had a few issues but work My self throught them. the Firewire let be fair is a probmatic plug, two small and wobbles around as does hdmi. why they use these connectors is beyond hope. But there hear, So first thing get that plug on your computer secure I use a bent right angel metal bar glued to back of computer then tye warp the plug. there might be better ways. But for tye warp stick on block I used a tywarp stick block NOW all secuer.....

READ.4.5 in the Manual....While in FireWire Return mode, each MultiMode button that is enabled will illuminate orange to alert you that the FireWire return is engaged for that channel.
Power User Tip:...... When a FireWire return is engaged, the analog input is by passed to the mix bus. Because of this, do not engage a FireWire return when your StudioLive is not connected and synced to a computer, as it will mute the analog input globally

So the unit has two states a Analog and Digital and the analog can be by passed. So switch the unit on press the firewire big button to see what channels light, It,s just as easy to press all button across the board to off, no lights, then I switch the board off leave off few seconds to cleaner electric down, switch on you should be able to use the inputs as analgue JUST MAKE SURE THE FIREWIRE LIGHT IS OFF. the computer will work just fine the next time you connect. if any diffitculty retry it. I still fine sometimes I have this problem but it a case of trial and error , but I always get it working. hope this helps
