so this recording,
in fact, almost all the songs that will be on this new album,
have been recorded using my new Strymon Iridium pedal.
most of the tracks are direct, trying out new IR's,
but some of the tracks are the iridium with IR's bypassed,
directly into my Mesa Boogie Mark 2b, miced up old school,
and blended with the direct tracks of the Iridium.

Beautiful playing bat.
IMO, upper-mids are too forward. It's like +3 @ 3-4K. It is thinning out that range.
Listened on ATH-M50's. Will listen in car later.
Kick and bass are spot on.
Sometimes excessive brightness could be caused by ear fatigue.
I'm sure you mix and come back fresh to listen again.
Your creativity and playing supersedes all this tech talk though.

Another gem. Man, bat, you really never miss. As is your usual, the song has a definite
mood to it. And as is usually the case, I can't quite describe it. But again, super work.

I don't hear any issues in the 3-5K Hz range like Bbd does, but Bbd is a pro, versus my hobby level experience and equipment.

I like the pronounced hats and ride cymbals, but they seem to poke out a bit, and sound closer than the rest of the mix, to my ears. And purely as a matter of taste: I envision hearing the drums as an audience member. So while a hat or ride may be definitely to the left for an actual drummer, the kit pieces would come from nearly the same spot for an audience member some distance away.
So I pan kit pieces closer to center more than most people, I think.
I would suggest knocking a few Db's off of the hats and rides, and maybe bring toward center
a bit. Or.....maybe not!
Having said all of that, the track sounds awesome as is :punk:

HI Bbd! thanks for the listening check...
3-4k, brought that down a bit, check.
i sure don't mind cutting things, hate boosting tho....

i like a 'clear' mix, but not a bright mix, so good call!

i'm starting to corral these tunes together now, so it's becoming a balance thing not just between the individual songs, but also between the lot.

more finals to come!

Hey bat (or should I call you SR71 :P )
Would it be an offense if I ripped your current mix? What I have in mind is ear training.

I'm using the "Train Your Ears" software. In a nutshell, it's a program that makes
random changes in EQ to a reference track, and you try to guess what it did.

I want to use the current mix as a reference with the software. I trust Bbd's judgement,
even though I don't hear the issue that he hears. Thus, I figure that I have a chance to
learn something, with a bit of hands on experience.

Makes sense?

i appreciate the kind words sir monkey,
they are encouraging.

drums,
i tend to mix drums as if i am the drummer,
that's the way i hear it, and see it in my mind.

occasionally, i'll do a mono drum mix,
and sometimes, depending on how intense the music panning is,
ends up being the way it ought to be.

but as far as high end 'ting' factor on the cymbals,
sometimes i really like it, and sometimes it's distracting,
and i THINK that's what folks are getting, it's poking out a bit.

i DID fix that on the new mix, and i think the mix is better for it,
so all those folk that called out the cymbals were right.
