Hi,

I was thinking of using the mic to record guitar from an amp I just wondered with a descent mic can I get good results?

Im using a Vox ac30 with a PRS.

Im assuming I just connect the mic to the Audiobox and no need for anything alse as the guitar will be through the amp.

Any tips!!

Cheers

Davie

You got it. Quality will be determined by choice of mics, but you don't have to break the bank. I prefer a Large Diaphagm Condenser, but there is a reason why the SM 57 is also used alot.

Hi Matt,

I tried to mic up the amp (first time I have done this) but when I record the levels are low and the amp is at a decent level and mic about 3 inches from the amp.

Strangely if I speak into the mic the levels are fine i can see the audio waves which is something I dont see when recording the guitar. Any idea what this may be?

Can you snap a pic of the mic setup, and list the mic you are using?

Otherwise, if the recording volume is low, and your preamp gain is not maxed out, just bring up the gain to get a better signal.

When you are recording, its best to watch the input meters, which you can expose via the inputs button on the S1 mixer. A safe range is to have the signal coming in between -18 and -12, and you will be fine.

These are some photos i have since disconnected the mic cable.

The mic is probably very poor tbh!!

All I really want to do is try and put a wee song together with a guitar, bass and some drum loops and maybe some vocals but I really dont have any kind of work flow at all.

Are you aware that you can plug your bass and guitar directly into the Audiobox, record them clean (dry) and the process that signal through an amp sim?

If you are, and you're trying to record the specific sound of your gear (guitar and amp)...

I like my Sennheiser e609 amp mic. There's a more expensive version (e906), but the 609 works fine for this amateur. No mic stand needed. Hangs from the mic cable. You can use a bit of gaffer's tape to hold the mic cable in place.
