Link Mode

Firstly it is explained in the manual. But I will also explain here. It is different in Faderport and Faderport 8/16.

Open a plugin on a track e.g. Pro EQ. Press Link button to light up. Hover your mouse over a parameter e.g. the frequency control for a particular band. The rotary encoder Pan/Parameter (Small Blue Knob top left) now controls that parameter in FP 8/16. In new Faderport the large Blue rotary encoder will do this.

Move your mouse now to another parameter and hover mouse directly over it. e.g. Gain of another band. Small Pan/Parameter Rotary knob now controls this parameter in FP 8/16 and large rotary encoder in new Faderport will do this.

Once you get used to this it is quite an amazing feature.

Shift+Link locks a parameter to the rotary knob.

The new Faderport is vastly superior to the classic model. Also it runs at USB 2 speeds now and will not slow your USB port down to USB 1 speed which is what Faderport classic will do. Not good if you have got an audio interface on the same port.

Also Faderport 8 is excellent in terms of knowing what tracks you are looking at. You just have to get used to it. Firstly it needs to be directly in front of you. Not to the left or right. Also you need to prop it up at the rear by about an inch or so. It is far easier to use and see the scribble strips.

Using the Bank button in conjunction with the Next Prev Buttons allows you to fly though large sessions with ease. Also some may not know this either. If in the software you whip down to channel 25 for example but Faderport is still showing you Channels 1-8 all you do is press the encoder button. Then Faderport 8/16 will jump right down to the selected channel in the software. Not only that the select light will be lit so you immediately know which channel to twiddle.

Faderport 8/16 is also better when you want to fine tune a whole bunch of tracks at once while you fine tune a mix. e.g. 8 drum tracks etc.

My interface is connected via Thunderbolt wouldn't want USB 2 slowing it down ;)

However I did some searching on this issue, and I think it might be an urban myth. Mostly I ran into people saying, Naaaah.. won't do that...

Not unless you've got a poorly designed hub (and it is hubs we're talking about here)

I might test the theory out later with a quick SSD read / write test.. with / without the FaderPort classic connected.

If your audio interface is connected via thunderbolt then the USB ports won't be effected anyway. Also PreSonus put out the warning about the classic Faderport running at USB 1 speeds, not me. So for them to say it then there may be some truth in it.

Personally I have my Faderport 8 (and originally Classic) connected to a pair of USB ports which are fed via a separate set of outputs from the motherboard that were independent of other USB outputs anyway. So even with the Classic I never experienced any issues. I don't use it now and have FP8 connected to those same ports so it seems like they are on there own USB outputs and don't effect anything else. Nothing else is connected on those ports also.

True but I have 7 or 8 other things connected to the hub!

Had a look for that but with no success. Where can I find the quote?

It was on the site somewhere, but a while ago I think. I agree it seems to be no longer there.
All the new models work at USB 2 speeds now so there is no need for concern.

I see now, thanks.

Just as an added note, That "blue" knob is annoying with all the clicking. What would be cool (or maybe I'm missing something) is if you could have the fader be the one and hit the link off to go back to volume. It's WAY smoother.

Well, I sold mine. Not sure if I'll be getting the 8 but it was foolish for me to jump the gun. Good unit, worth the price for some things, but the 8/16 just do SO much more, not just more faders.

Thanks for the help I received :)
