I'm using SO with a Presonus 1824c. If I play through the software (not the zero latency mode) there can be crackling. This can be removed by turning up the buffering, but at the cost of latency. My question is, what software/hardware is required to reliably achieve the lowest possible latency? My PC is a pretty high end machine that I put together myself, though originally intended to do machine learning stuff as part of my work.

What features would a great DAW machine have? And how much impact is there to having other software open, like a browser for example? I'd be curious how much input buffering others are using.

There are reasons for crackles.
What are you specks?

Studio One version and Windows version.
What buffer setting are you using?
Do you get this issue with standard Presonus plugs?
Do you get this on each new song or on a specific song?

Windows 10, with the most recent SO Artist. I was set for 16 samples of buffer, but had to go up to about 256 today to completely clear it up. A new song, but the only difference was the imported bass track. It could be related to Chrome being busy in the background, which is why I asked about it. But the CPU usage indicator barely ever went above about 25%.

Stop chrome obviously. BTW it's worth turning off Chromes MIDI functionality (Google for details).

Use latencymon to optimise your PC. Google for details.

You may want to try turning off turbo boost in BIOS.

Make sure you aren't running any unnecessary processes and window services in the background.

It's worth spending a day optimising your PC if you can. I've spent weeks myself, probably a lot longer than that (but won't admit it).

Intel i9 9900K (Gigabyte Z390 DESIGNARE motherboard), 32GB RAM, EVGA Geforce 1070 (Nvidia drivers).
Dell Inspiron 7591 (2 in 1) 16Gb.
Studio One Pro 6.x, Windows 11 Pro 64 bit, also running it on Mac OS Catalina via dual boot (experimental).
Presonus Quantum 2626, Presonus Studio 26c, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Faderport Classic (1.45), Atom SQ, Atom Pad, Maschine Studio, Octapad SPD-30, Roland A300, a number of hardware synths.

Its easy to add your specs to your signature area in the forum. This is the best. Also add your CPU, MB Model, video card, audio interface and type and anything else noteworthy. Too much is better than too little.
I used to get that crackling all the time. It would sound like what i call screen tearing. I would happen when i had to many VSTs open with moving displays, also when using Chrome or FF.
Like previously mentioned, optimize what you can. Many good posts and links to information if you search within this forum.
Try a different USB port. Dont share your Audio Interface port (USB if you have that interface type) with other devices. Many onboard USB controllers are shared, you need to look in the manual to see whats what.

Ultimately for me, i moved away form the onboard Intel graphic's. Got a cheap (under $70) Nvidia based 710 card which is now old in the tooth. This solved most of it. On my getting old in the tooth I7 4770, i can record guitar audio at 32 buffers in UC with no issues.

Optimize and good luck.

Thanks for the pointers. I'm sure it doesn't help matters that I have 7 mic'd inputs to process for drums.

It really depends. You'll basically want to break it down as to what's working a little at a time. 1st, as mentioned, otomize your PC. When recording, check the buffer (typically, go with a sort of low buffer since you're drumming, like a max of 128, though 64 preferred).
Also, watch your CPU meter at the bottom left of the transport. Open it, and select to view all plugins. Sort the CPU column from highest to lowest by clicking on it. Disable any plugs you're not using at that time just for the recording for now. At least any plugins that show a high percentage such as 8% or more.

That's the breaking down process. Start small, and chances are you'll flush out what is causing the crackles.

If you have some synth or instrument tracks running, it may be time to render them as audio. When doing so. It's a good idea to either remove the instrument, or if you need to keep the VSTi instruments, then at least disable them. It keeps things way leaner, and you'll see the CPU meter drop significantly.

That sort of stuff usually works well.
