Is it possible to connect multiple 1818VSL's to obtain more inputs?

Thanks,

No. Its a limitation of usb that they cant be chained. Look at an adat preamp to add 8 additional channels.

The 1818VSL has ADAT optical in and out. This leads me to believe that you should be able to use two of them together, sending the preamps of the 2nd unit over ADAT to the first unit for at total of 16 channels (plus 2 spdif, that's where the "18" part comes from in "1818VSL" - capable of 18 in and 18 out max).

It would be cheaper to go with a DigiMax D8 mic preamp as the 2nd unit, since that has ADAT out and would do exactly the same thing in this situation, but the mic inputs of that pre are all on the back. Depends on your needs.

If you need more channels than this without going to a StudioLive mixer, the Firestudio Project is where you want to look, provided you have a firewire connection. These can be daisy-chained, because firewire as a standard allows for recording more channels at one time than usb (which is probably one of the reasons why it hasn't completely disappeared at this point).

Hope that helps. :)

Unfortunately no. The 1818 will not function unless directly connected to the pc. That s why everyone is using adat pres.

Then what is the point of the ADAT output? Not being snide, I just want to know :) Thanks

....EDIT.... A quick Google search tells me it looks like I am in fact wrong about this. Like I said, no experience using ADAT myself. So, I guess there is more complex stuff going on inside the box than I considered. Maybe the ADAT needs the USB to tell it what to do, which sounds plausible. Thanks for letting me chime in and learn a couple things.

**EDIT** upon further review, my blue comment below may actually be a complete fabrication as I haven't actually been able to get it to function this way - can anyone confirm how ADAT out 1-8 are routed?

what is the point of the ADAT output?

The ADAT output gives you the direct outs for the 8 local mic pres, as long as the 1818 is connected to a computer. Useful for anything you'd otherwise use direct outs for on a console (assuming you have something to convert them with.)

I use the 1818 with a Digimax FS, which - besides providing 8 additional mic inputs to the 1818 over ADAT - also receives the ADAT output from the 1818 and gives me analog direct outs for all 16 pres. I use these to "cheat" the limit of only having 3 monitor mixes on the 1818 by giving people the main mix plus one direct source. Using the aux inputs of a Behringer PowerPlay XL headphone amp, I can create 4 additional "main plus another source" mixes. Musicians are able to control the level of the aux source relative to the main mix via a control on the headphone amp.

Hope that helps you discover some possibilities!

So, if I had an 1818VSL, I could combine it with my Focusrite OctoPre Mk2 via the ADAT connection to add another 16 inputs......for a total of 16, right?

How does this show up in StudioOne?

Umn....your math's a bit off but, yes, you can add the Octopre to add another EIGHT inputs for a total of EIGHTEEN....the 1818's SPDIF provide an additional two more.

It shows up in S1 exactly like like that 1-8....ADAT 9-16...SPDIF 17-18.

He he.....sorry about the faulty math!

I meant to say "an additional 8, for a total of 16". I haven't purchased the 1818VSL yet so wasn't aware of the possible two additional inputs via SPDIF.

This looks like this could be a good solution for me. I'm looking to replace my trusty (but aging) Roland VS2480 in my studio with a computer based system. I have already purchased and have been using the Presonus AudioBox 44VSL for remote recordings......it's working out well, and from what I've seen so far StudioOne is pretty powerful and intuitive. I need generally need 16 inputs in the studio, so the Focusrite OctoPre together with the 1818VSL should do the trick.

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

Hello, I'm new, but it sounds like I could still purchase a sencond 1818VSL unit, plus an ADAT preamp (?) to be able to use 16 channels. Is this correct? I love my 1818, but in the future I might want more than 8 channels and would like to know what I need before I buy another unit. What brand of manufacturer or model of preamp would I be looking at? Any help would appreciated.

Not sure why you would want a second 1818 and an adat pre. To get 16 channels (xlr), all you need is an adat pre with 8 xlr ins to connect to your existing 1818.

Thats even better on the pocket book, lol. Does PreSonus build an ADAT preamp? I'm really loving my 1818VSL and would gladly buy another product from them.

Yes just add a DIGIMAX 8 for 8 more channels. For a total of 16. I've done this and it is all I need. 8 tracks of acoustic drums and 2 tracks of vocal mics and 6 guitar amplifier inputs. Works like a charm.

AudioBox 1818VSL, DIGIMAX D8, Lenovo WIN 10, also a MacBook Pro, i want to use with a Quantum 2626.

I can confirm that. I use an 1818 and Digimax D8. I've also added two more channels using an ART DPSII preamp with SPDIF outs.

If you have a Mac, you can aggregate two interfaces. I don't have two 1818 so i can't comment further, but I have had the 1818 plus another USB 2-ins interface "aggregated" to become more inputs.

I have one 1818vsl and an ada8000, but seek more inputs. On Win 8.1, AMD A6-4400, 6gb ram. Is it possible to add a second vsl series unit to add channels and have them show up in studio one? Mixing and recording a live 5 piece band with full drumset and 5 monitors. All 5 sing too. 24 in x 16 outs would do it. Only other option would be submixing instruments that are not played simultaneously in the analog realm before the ADC's and splitting them out after the fact. Don't want to chance cordswapping. So, how should I add those 8 inputs to a laptop with no firewire or expresscard?

I also use an ART dual tube pre for the spdif inputs.

Thank you

As far as I have ever heard, it is not possible to aggregate devices on a Windows machine. I'm not even sure you can aggregate two USB devices on a Mac.

The 1818 has 18 inputs: 8 from analog inputs, 2 from SPDIF, and 8 from ADAT. Whatever you connect via ADAT should show up on those 8 ADAT inputs.
