Apart from security and remote access is there any reason to purchase Win 10 Pro instead of Win 10 Home to run a DAW?

I'm moving from Mac.

Cheers

Hi Kip

Well, I use Home for my system, personally I've never felt any need to go to Pro - I don't believe there is anything in Pro that will significantly enhance the usage or experience of S1 - Home works just fine for me.

Caveat, that is just my view - I could be completely wrong, I'm willing to be educated ;)

Not sure that really helps though :D

EDIT: you could go for Home, but then upgrade to Pro if it becomes necessary

Pro gives you the flexibility to not install Windows updates when they are released. This alone is worth it for many people.

Since the next major update of Studio One 5.X will only be supported on Windows 10, I'm pondering updating from Windows 8.1.

With Win10 Pro you still have to know how to change settings to 'block' updates.

But even with Win10 Home you now have more options on scheduling 'updates'.
And with some finagling per this article you can block near all of them.

But I'd ensure that the Win10 Security updates get installed. ;)

I will Echo that a Windows update blocker is a critical piece no matter which one you decide to use. That and a tool like Windows Privacy Dashboard are the first two things that I install when building a PC.

Aside from that, I don't know of any differences between the two versions that would affect Studio One.

I have two computers running W10 and Studio One. One was upgraded from Windows 7 Home, so I will assume that the Windows 10 version is also "Home".
The other one was always Windows10. I think it's Windows 10 Pro but now that I think about it, I never really gave it much thought. :-) I guess that would help support the idea that it really doesn't make a difference.

Thank you all!

I guess I'll need to decide if turning off/delaying the Win update process is worth the extra $100.

I suppose as Leo suggests I could purchase Win 10 Home then pay for an upgrade after to Pro if need be.

I am in a similar situation. I have got Win 7 Home and will upgrade to Win 10 Home as well with a view to maybe upgrading to Pro later.

Because now the whole updating process is easier with Win 10 Pro and Home as well. You can delay an update now with Home at least until it is convenient to do so. Instead of in the middle of a session.

In network settings there should be a checkbox saying that you are using a metered connection - meaning it costs money. Nice enough MS allows you to postpone then until convenient.

Featured updates, like Creators update each spring or so, can be postponed for a year.
This is larger update, and can mean new drivers are needed and such - so good with this option.

I use (and do recommend) Sledgehammer 2.6 to stop automatic updates completely.
It also lets you manually install them whenever you feel the need to.
For big updates like Creators Updates, I temporarily uninstall Sledgehammer.

My last computer purchase was a machine with win10 home on it. Strict DAW machine.

I really haven't had any problems with updates, they happen but haven't had any problems.

It's been two years.

I have to buy a new surf computer because TurboTax won't install on a win7 machine.

Oh woa is me

Home also gives you that flexibility now:

I absolutely would not recommend third party software stopping updates, not a good idea. Use what Microsoft provides.

Intel i9 9900K (Gigabyte Z390 DESIGNARE motherboard), 32GB RAM, EVGA Geforce 1070 (Nvidia drivers).
Dell Inspiron 7591 (2 in 1) 16Gb.
Studio One Pro 6.x, Windows 11 Pro 64 bit, also running it on Mac OS Catalina via dual boot (experimental).
Presonus Quantum 2626, Presonus Studio 26c, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Faderport Classic (1.45), Atom SQ, Atom Pad, Maschine Studio, Octapad SPD-30, Roland A300, a number of hardware synths.
