this is the 8th tune i've posted, off of my new album i'm working on.
the album will be called "Wild Animals".

since this is the first mix,
i'd love to get some response on how it's translating on everyone's different playback systems.

if you hear any issues, please let me know!
thanks.

also,
how the h3LL would you categorize this tune, if you had to?
i don't know what style to call it.
LOL

OK, first off, the song is really cool. With the instrumentation and harmonies you use it reminds me kind of like what a 60s British psychedelic/jazz group might have sounded like if any of them had been recorded properly.

Now, the freaking slide intro reminds me of why I hate you a little sometimes; cool and skanky, gritty and smooth, raw and done to a turn, just right. ;)

The harmonies are superb. Did you use a harmonizer or spend several days (or weeks) tracking them?

The mix. Well, to me (and this is just me, as always) there could be more drums and bass, and more separation in the guitar parts to make room for them. Maybe just more clarity overall. Difficult to do with so many close parts weaving around each other. On the other hand,as it is now it kinda fits the song, so.....
Man, you know how subjective a mix is. I know this, it sounds GREAT!!

that's some cool feedback, rscain!
thanks!
that slide, is pretty much a hack, for me.
don't get me wrong, i try hard, but i'm a sh!tty slide player!!
LOL

the harmonies, were done during lunch hour on two days,
so 2 hours of actual recording.
harmonies are, for me, my bread and butter. it's just easy,
maybe all those years gigging paid off!

now, the guitars are hard panned left and right,
so i can't do much more separation than that.
then i recorded a super compressed version of the guitars, and panned them in a bit,
maybe i can pan those all the way out too!

appreciate the feedback.

yea, i guess...
i mean, i don't know what other folks around here do when they are actively working on mixes,
but me,
if i'm working out mix issues,
i pretty much stay on it til it's done.

so, if i post something on thursday,
probably by friday night, i've already moved on,
so i was looking for quick references to translation issues,
and those help a lot when i'm wearing the mixing hat.

later, i might wear the production hat....!
LOL
but usually, as far as arrangements and what not, i'm already dialed into what i want,
i just need engineering help!

so thanks for checking these things out when you can,
didn't mean to make you feel cheap!!
heheheh

I meant to chime in while the mix was still up. But you've moved on?
Ah, you forgot about the prenup! You are entitled to my producers intuition!

Slide guitar: You're actually Jimmy Page incognito! Sorry to blow your cover.
Such a great intro, has that eerie feel. After the slide intro, the song ambiance really brightens up a lot. That can work- that dramatic shift in atmosphere. But what I would suggest:
The single words that you sing near the beginning...maybe have those sprinkled in during the slide intro. Like something distant that wants to be heard.

And maybe a few more slide bits, de-emphasized, after to intro.

This is probably more producer-like than mix-like. But hey, those lines are really blurred a lot.
So mix-wise, I crave having the eerie slide intro's ambiance blur into the rest of the song a bit.

Ah, man, there's always somebody trying to pull you back, with their own ideas!

But it's another great song!

i kinda like the idea,
of putting a long-tail reverb on the very end of the opening slide part, to get it to bleed into the real intro with the kick.

i'll play with that idea of a background-mixed vocal during the intro...
the idea i was started off with, was something like 'in my time of dying',
but it may be too short of an intro to do that with..

thanks for the input!

Ah ha, it is Jimmy! Now I can tell everyone that I once bounced a
production idea of mine off Jimmy!
Don't worry, you can still ghost write, because nobody will believe me
Looking forward to your next mix. See ya then!
