For a while I'll have to set aside monitor speakers and acoustic room treatment, and learn to mix on headphones instead. I've decided on Sennheiser HD 650 which operate at 300 Ohms.
Is the front-panel 1/4" headphone jack on my Firestudio Project suitable for driving the Sennheiser HD 650s? I hope to avoid buying a headphone amp. Thanks |
It should be sufficient. But why not just plug them in and find out for yourself? If you've got plenty of volume the answer is yes. If not.....then no. My HD 598's work fine with my firestudios but they do run at a lower impedance. Not sure tho why you're going for open backed home hi-fi headphones as that's what the 650's are designed for:
Can be directly connected to stationary hi-fi components of the highest quality, in particular SACD, DVD-A and CD players

Thanks for your reply, cristof ==
I'll purchase the HD 650 headphones online, so no opportunity to try before buying. And since I don't want to purchase a headphone amp, I'd opt out of buying the HD 650s if it turns out they do require a headphone amp. As for them being home hi-fi headphones, a lot of reliable sources say the HD 650s are well suited to mixing - especially when paired with Sonarworks Reference 4 software as I intend to do. |

Thanks for encouraging advice, Matt.
Per my online research, I'm not sure why AKG K712 Pro headphones at just 62 ohms are said to require more amplifier than the Sennheiser HD650s at 300ohms... I think the HD650s are the right choice, but I don't want to add a headphone amp... When using just basic closed-back tracking headphones (Tascam TH-200, I think), if I turn up the FireStudio Project's front-panel Headphone Out beyond 3 or 4 it's too loud for me. So I'm hoping the FSP will power the HD650s. If anybody can educate me I'd appreciate it. |
Its not what you use, its how well you know it. Damn skippy. Too many of us feed into the hype of "if we just had this piece of gear or that we'd suddenly become the greatest producer on earth." That being said.....I still suffer greatly from G.A.S......LOL!!

If anybody's interested, I bought the Sennheiser HD650 headphones (300 ohms) I get sufficient volume with the FireStudio Project's headphone volume pot set to about 3 (on a scale of 10). So the FSP easily drives these headphones.

That's good to know. Thanks for sharing your results Tom!
