The version in the video hadn’t been mastered yet...no overall compression or limiting. The final version was completely mixed and mastered in Studio One.

phpBB [video]

This song came together pretty fast.

All the guitars tones are from my Fractal AX8, except delay and reverb, which are the StudioOne plugins. The drums are Steven Slate Drums 4.

I’ve been dabbling in StudioOne for nearly 10 years. For several years, I mainly used it as a means to record ideas that I planned on finishing if I ever got a band together. Over the past couple years I decided to make a push to finish these songs. I always struggled to get passable vocal recorings. I bought an SM7B last year, and it’s solved all my problems. I plan on finishing several original songs, along with some covers this year.

Very Nice!

Really good song. Nice job on all the guitar parts and the vocals. I think the whole thing could be just a bit louder but it sounds really good. I really like the vocal tone at 3:37.

Great song! From the composition, playing, singing, & mixing. Enjoyable to listen to, and sounds very professional. I would suggest bringing the vocals up front somewhat more (at 3:37 they balance with the mix, when the instruments are quieter). When the instrumentation is louder, the vocals aren't "buried", but they sound great and could come up a bit, in my opinion.
Glad you decided to finish this. Keep it up!

Sounds fantastic!! IMHO, with a song of this caliber, if you're going to put it on YouTube, you'll get a LOT more traction out of "thematic" video. Do you have it up on any digital outlets yet? Great song, seriously awesome job on everything! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, guys! I toiled with the vocal level in several different mixdowns. Everyone has a different preference. Some might say the guitars need to be louder, and I feel like I split the difference in that regard. But I know I’ve listened to it so many times it’s hard for me to be objective. :D

Thanks! By “thematic” do you mean some more cinematic or something with a story? I basically threw this video together just to get the song out for now. I figured it would be better than putting it with some still photos. I don’t really have the means to do much more, right now. My iPhone 8 is the only camera I have. Also, my computer is great for music, but garbage for video. This video was a nightmare to edit and sync the audio and video.

I’m going to release it digitally very soon...I think I’ve decided on Amuse for distribution.

Well, first off, and please don't take this wrong - you did a top notch job on the video - but for me, unless you're Thom Yorke or someone like that, I'm not really interested watching a dude laying down tracks in his basement. But I'm also not real big on videos either so I may be an outlier in that regard too. I typically just pull up a song then minimize the window so I'm not distracted by the video.

And honestly, I'm not even sure what I meant by "thematic". Perhaps and lyric video over pictures to extend the shipwreck metaphor? Dunno. Sorry, that's really not very helpful.

As far as the vocal level, the only place I noticed anything in that regard was starting around 3:40 or so. The vocal seems a bit quiet. When you start doing the answer-back thing with the guitar solo, it could definitely come up IMHO. Especially since it's such a great vocal performance and you've got nothing whatsoever to hide. I really would like to hear the vocal trading off with the guitar solo. Right now, the guitar seems louder. BTW, great playing and guitar tones too!

This song is really well written, performed and arranged. You did an excellent job with the drum programming too. I didn't really even notice them because everything else is so spot on. But, if I purposefully stop and listen to them, they start sounding "mechanical" after a while. I think one thing that would really put this track over the top, is to get a real drummer to lay down some real drums!

Again, nice job! You kicked some serious @ss! Love this! :punk:

I really like it.

Not a lot to criticize here. I think the guitars sounds REALLY good.

I think the video is fine. My wife actually encouraged me to do a similar thing with the last cover tune I did. I said "no". Not sure if you did these at actual time of tracking or if these are just takes that might or might not have been the end result, but look convincing enough, nonetheless. You are missing the drums though ;)

If I had any constructive criticism to offer on this it would be that the vocal might have a little too much reverb, which is what I think makes it feel like it is a little low in the mix. A little more level and a little less reverb would probably sit better here, in my opinion.

You should be proud of getting this all together and as tight and well played/sung as it is.

Good job.

Very nice work .. well produced too.

I have to agree with Miked on the video but as he says that can be a bit of a personal taste thing.

Thanks, man. I actually ended up doing just that. I also added a little more compression to the vocal. I had been obsessing over this mix for far too long...ready to move on. I’ve had 4 other songs pop into my head over the past few weeks so I have a lot of work to do!

I’ve submitted the track to be released through Amuse. It’s on track to be released 2/15.
I also uploaded it to my Bandcamp website.

I really dig the guitars, sound and skill-wise!
The overall mix is pleasant to listen too. You've got a great voice.
The drums sound a bit too programmed for me. Maybe some humanization is needed for extra groove. But that's just my opinion.
Overall great work!

Thanks!

I tried using the humanization in Studio One, but it sounded off to me. I have to wonder if anyone would ever know the drums were programmed if I hadn’t said they were. I basicallly programmed the drums measure by measure with a million mouse clicks, and manually varied the velocity. I wrote most of the parts while playing on my actual kit. I think if I had lied and said I played and recorded all the drums, people would think I was a really tight and precise drummer.

I was just nitpicking. I know it's very difficult to make programmed drums sound natural. I think it's the rolls on the snare and toms that give it away here and there. For the rest it's really well done :D

So I used Amuse to distribute my track. The release date was Friday, Feb 15. It seems to be live almost everywhere except iTunes/Apple Music. I’m not sure what got messed up, but I’m hoping it gets resolved soon. At least it’s on Spotify, Google Play and Amazon Music.

Congrats on getting your song distributed. Hopefully you’ll get a lot plays and a llot of money from it.

Have you joined BMI Or ASCAP and registered your song with them?

I don’t know what others think of these organizations but it’s probably not a bad idea.

I’m gonna follow you on Spotify

Thanks! I joined ASCAP.

I wish I had known about Spotify’s playlist submission process before I released the song. I didn’t know you had to do that before the actual release date, but they don’t make it easy since you can’t set up your artist profile until the song is released. Now I know for my next release.
