Here's the first take of a recording of Holst's arrangement of Bach's Fugue in G, BWV 577, which he called "Fugue a la Gigue." Much work still to do on this piece, but I think it's sounding pretty good so far.
Recording made with VSL winds, brass, and solo strings, with Spitfire Chamber Strings. All recorded in Notion at this point, with VSL MIRPro for reverb and instrument placement, and VSL MIRacle analog reverb enhancement. phpBB [audio] Input always appreciated! Michael

Nice gig if you can get it!
Not sure I'd want to go to all of the effort to properly place instruments in the sound stage myself, but you did a wonderful job. Very natural sounding, like I was 12th row center (my fav seating location!). And sure do love Spitfire. Lovely library. |
Quite a display! Fireworks, i would say!
And I can appreciate the effort as I am quite familiar with various renditions of BWV577. It's really part of Bach's standard showcase repertoire in fact. I got a version by The Canadian Brass, a convincing organ rendition by Simon Preston and even a "symphonic" one by Boston's finest and Seiji Ozawa, also a Stokowski classic recorded in the late fifties. Merci! |
themaartian wroteNice gig if you can get it! What's better than Bach? Bach arranged by Holst! I use the MIRx settings on MIRPro and that's a good start for instrument placement. I'll adjust some to taste as part of the ongoing editing of this piece. Thanks for listening!

Marcato wroteQuite a display! Fireworks, i would say! Thanks for listening! I'll have to look up the Stokowski. I've been into his arranging lately. I've got a version of the Little Fugue that he made. It's all transcribed into Notion and has been waiting for the final touches for a long time now! I've been trying to get a conductor's score of some of his arrangements for orchestra from Theodore Presser Co for months. Not sure why they're so stingy, I'm willing to pay to rent them or whatever...
