Not midi audio, midi as in, to control an external device.
When exporting from the "SONG" tab....the only options given are for sound files.
It's like my Studio One Professional doesn't even see that there's a midi track in the project.

I'm using midi to change kits between songs on a Roland TD10-1 and turning on/off effects in a pair of TC Helicon VoiceLive 3 units.

Might help to explain exactly what I'm doing.
Starting with a multi track .song file, I'm creating backing tracks for live performance in a Casino Cover band.. (no backing tracks, no paycheck, and playing casinos you can actually earn a living)..

So I get a 9-10-15 whatever number of tracks, to get the backing tracks as I want them...then I export the music portion on MAIN...the Click track on Sub 1.
I want to also export the midi to control the external devices but there's no option to do so on the export dialogue box.

I then take the mixed down stereo music track, and the click, and create a new song called "set 1 (venue name), then open the folder for each song and drag in the Music and Click for each song...resulting in one long, full night's music, in a single file that isn't gobbling up CPU time because it's just audio tracks.
But then I have to create a midi track for changing the drums, and a midi track to change the efx processors....

I just want to be able to export the midi for controlling the external devices so I can have it on each song and drag that in as well...So that I don't have to create a new midi track every time we change the set lists for different venues....

If there's a way to do it, I haven't found it yet.

Hey grumpops

The easiest I think is, after you have saved and mixed down your song, you would browse (Using the browser on the right > files tab on the bottom or shortcut: F9) to your folder where you want that midi file saved
Now just drag that midi (not the track itself) from your session and drop it in where you want saved on that browser.
That should create a midi file for you with that track only.
Don't forget to put those start and end loop markers in as you would when doing a regular mixdown

Hope this helps

Goto the Arrange Panel in S1
Right click on the Midi track you want to export
Select "Export Parts to Midi File"
Select a name and place where you want to save it
That will create a midi file for you.

is that what you want to do.

Kwickcomposer, actually, what you're describing is what I'd do it I wanted to export a midi file that contained music data...I don't even get the track to light up when selected...it's just a straight line from Start loop to End Loop...with a single value in it...let's say the number 48...that's it...
I'm sending a signal to an external device to change program on, in this case, a roland TD drum brain to switch kits.

Perhaps I should have pointed out...It's not an instrument track...I go to the track tab and select ADD AUTOMATION TRACK...I"m trying to export automation, not musical information.

FinalSaga, either I don't understand what you're saying, or it won't do what you're saying...I can drag the automation track anywhere on the S1 surface but once I try to place it in a folder, it just gives me the circle with the line through it "you can't do this".

CTL+Alt+S = Save As: Select midi export in the export type list in the dialog.

The right click "Export as Midi" described in the manual below opens the same dialog but only exports the selected clips and (in my tests anyway) doesn't keep the relative position of clips across different tracks if all the clip start times aren't at 0.

7.2.8 Export a MIDI File
To export an Instrument Part to a MIDI file, [Right]/ [Control]-click on the Part and select Export Parts to MIDI File. Choose a file name and storage location in the pop-up menu and click OK. A Standard MIDI File will be created with a .MID file extension.

Multiple Instrument Parts can be exported at once to a single file. To do this, select the desired Parts and use the same process as above. One MIDI file will be created that includes individual MIDI clips for each Part, in the correct sequence, with a common start time.

You can also drag-and-drop any Instrument Part to a location in the File Browser to export a MIDI file to that location. If you drag-and-drop multiple parts at once, they will be written to one MIDI file with multiple Parts.

I don't think I'm explaining myself very clearly at all
CTRL-ALT-S saves the entire project as a midi file. Not what I'm looking for.

I want to save a single line, which is already midi, as just that, a midi instruction line.

The image below is what we play from when we're playing live.
Screenshot (1).jpg

Please note the track below the music.
It's a midi track that controls the drummer's Roland Drum Brain telling it which kit to call up as the song ends and before the next one starts. (roughly 3-4 seconds)

The three .wave files are mixdowns from one of these files:
Screenshot (2).jpg

The main files is mixed down to a stereo mix, a click track (sub 1) and a bass track (sub 2 just in case I ever need to use it)

I want to be able to add that drum instruction midi track on the main file so when I open the folder for a given song, I can just drag all four into the setlist file we play from.
Currently, I have to put all 50 or so songs into the setlist file, and then create the midi track for the drums.
If we use different songs the second day of the weekend, then I have to do it all over again....can't plug and unplug songs into the set file at random because it screws up the timeline...Say I take out a 3:50 song and replace it with a 5:02 song? I have to then move everything to the right to make room for the new song...the midi line doesn't move with the rest of it when I make the move.

It would be much simpler if I could just have the midi info stored in the individual song folders.

THAT is what I'm trying to do.

That's not midi data. That's an automation envelope controlling a midi parameter. You can't export that directly to midi ... afaik anyway.

If you want to export midi CC's or Program Changes or anything else like that to a midi file, put the envelopes for those things in midi clips (in the controller lane), not on automation envelopes, then you can export it all in a midi file...

Image

Note: You may need at least one midi note in a midi clip to capture the other stuff (cc's) in the file export (but try it without a note and see), if so, just click in one note to your "midi automation clip" and set it's velocity to 0.

Hope that helps.

Please forgive me but, this is totally noob for someone who's been using S1 for a few years but.

I don't understand what you said.
Controller lane??

I'm afraid I have no clue what you mean. That's a term I've never heard.

That's what most users of midi sequencers call it, "Controller Lane", but look at manual section 10.5.2. Studio One calls it the "Part Automation Lane"...

Below the Music Editor (which shows the musical notes for the selected Instrument Part), you will notice the Part Automation lane. At the upper left of the lane, the Parameter tab shows the parameter currently displayed in the lane.

I noticed from your image you posted that you didn't use an automation track but used an instrument track.
I was able to recreate the image but I don't get an option to either save or export when I right click.

The picture that KiwiComposed posted is showing the menu item in a section of the menu named Recent Items which cycles items from the context menus and sub menus that you've used before to that section for convenience.

Image

The actual source menu item is in the menu: Instrument Parts | Export Parts to Midi File. The manual doesn't make that distinction though...

7.2.8 Export a MIDI File
To export an Instrument Part to a MIDI file, [Right]/ [Control]-click on the Part and select {...should maybe say "In the Instrument Parts Menu"...} - Export Parts to MIDI File

Stumbled upon this thread in hopes of a solution which I eventually figured out.

The tip was in the manual 10.5.3 (though not very obvious...)
To add a new automation envelope to the Part Automation lane, select Add/Remove from the list to open the Automation menu. This menu is identical to the Automation menu mentioned in the Automation Envelopes on the Track section of this chapter.

1. So I copied the automation track info (that doesn't get exported to MIDI during an export).IMPORTANT: Add a node at 0:0:0 ticks so the data gets copied from the start of the track
2. Then went to the corresponding MIDI track with the MIDI data already on it and double clicked the MIDI data so the MIDI data shows up on the bottom pane. (If there's no data, create something as earlier mentioned.)
3. Click the 3 dots to the left of "Velocity", go to "parameter" open MIDI and choose the cc: of your choice. hit OK
4. Now that cc # appears on the row of cc#'s. Click it
5. Rewind to the start of the track and paste the automation data that you copied in step 1.

Hope that helps somebody

I'm trying to figure this out as well. I insert all my prog. changes and cc commands(nodes) into the midi editor and everything works fine. When I try to export the tracks as MIDI files and try dragging them back into studio one on my PC or our drummers PC at rehearsal, S1 tries to load general midi and creates a new song. It doesn't allow you to even bring it in the session. I've tried the automation
method described above as well with the same results. This works like a charm in reaper, not sure how S1 handles this File info. Any insight here would be awesome.
Thanks...
