Is there a guide I can read to learn all I need to know about integrating something like a stereo compressor? I want to connect an ART PRO Vla 2 stereo compressor to use on mixdown.

I am using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4.

As far as physical connections, I use the RCA plugs, 3 and 4 on the back of the Scarlett and send them into the 1/4" channel 1 and channel 2 respectively on the back of the ART.

From the respective outputs on the ART, I run 1/4" cables back into inputs 1 and 2 of the Scarlett.

I believe this is right as far as physical connections go.

Inside Studio One I am directing all tracks to a bus and that bus is outputting via the RCA 3 & 4 outpus and into the ART.

From there I get a bit hazy. I can see the LED lights on the ART being effected.

How do I then get the effect of the compressor back into Studio One and printed?

Thanks very much!

Just a quick look at the Scarlett 2i4 reveals that the RCA outputs would not be the way to go in reality. Only because they may only be delivering the standard -10dbV output level which RCA jacks are supposed to do.

What is wrong with the balanced jack line outputs on the rear of the scarlett. That seems to be the correct place to feed the external device.

You may need to setup pipeline as well in order to do this correctly.

Ok I'll try that.

As for Pipeline...you need to use this plugin when operating external things like a stereo compressor?

You could either use Pipeline as an Insert on your Master Bus,

or

You can set the output of your Master Bus to whatever output is connected to your compressor.
Then make a new stereo channel and set it's input to the channels your compressor is going back into the Scarlett. Solo safe that channel (shift+click on solo) and turn on the input monitoring.

The difference between those methods is:
- with pipeline you have to export your mix. exporting will of course be real time because S1 detects a pipeline.
- with the other method you record your mix onto the new stereo channel.

The only difference is that with pipeline you can set a delay adjustment to compensate for your roundtrip latency. Not necessary on a full mix but quite important if you process individual channels with pipeline.

I'd suggest you try both and pick your poison / whatever suits your workflow better.

Best,
Frank

Thankyou.

Let's say I have a single mono vocal track and I want to route that to my outboard compressor.

How do I do it? Do I insert the mono pipeline plugin onto that vocal track?

Then what? How do I 'print' the effect of the compressor on the vocal?

Can the effect be monitored in real time?

Exactly, you do insert the mono pipeline plugin into the vocal track.
You choose the i/o of your sound card where the compressor is connected and you route it via the send and return at the pipeline. You monitor the signal in realtime and also you can use the mix knob for parallel processing. After that you print your vocal track using the track function "Transform to rendered audio". This will be done automatically in realtime.
*(In case of parallel processing with the mix knob, be sure first to set the Offset to compensate the latency between the dry and wet signal)

Hey all...so now I am back with all my gear and the scenario is similar but different.

This time I have an RME Fireface UC as my interface and I want to run a stereo mix out of Studio One...into the ART Pro VLA2 stereo compressor for compression and then back into Studio One and I want to save/ record that compressed stereo signal onto a new track in Studio One.

So I use Pipeline? I guess the stereo mix will be coming from my 'Mains' or the Stereo Bus I created before the Mains. I want that signal compressed with the ART Pro...and then that compressed signal printed (is that the right word?) back in my DAW.

Can anyone suggest how I connect cables? Can it be done with what I have?

Thanks and all the best

Did you ever get this resolved with the RME unit? I have a Babyface Pro I'd like to try it with...

S1 6
Win 10
16 GB RAM, i5, 3.2G
Babyface Pro interface, Faderport classic
Guitars, amps, keyboards, etc.

Not really mate.

Does anyone know if there is a way to route to an external hardware compressor or eq WITHOUT using Pipeline? I had a mono bass track...and listening to that track in my headphones it was dead center panned, as you'd expect of a straight up and down mono track.

I put an instance of Pipeline Mono on the track and made the correct sends and returns and I only hear the signal out of the left headphone.

Dunno why. Anyone know?

I'm routing to a Klark Teknik 76-KT

thank you

I ended up figuring it out. Just stupid errors on my part. Somehow with combination of hardware/ cable routing and software send/ return routing I had managed to create a big feedback loop. All my Klark Teknik stuff is working perfectly now. Sorted it out.

I had Pipeline set to fully wet...that wasn't a good idea with the routing I had managed to set up
