I’ve been told it won’t work past Mojave, but is that set in stone? If I buy the FireWire to thunderbolt adaptor, will it be recognized at all in my 2020 iMac? Is there no chance that Logic or Digital Performer can see it and function? Such a disappointment, if so. This board has been fantastic, and I really don’t want to chunk out $ for something new. If there’s absolutely no way it will work, what is the next best board/interface?

Interestingly the SL 16.0.2 can be used with Big Sur, as this article of Knowledge Base shows:

https://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/a ... e-Version-

The SL 16.4.2 and 24.4.2 use a different architecture, so macOS 10.14.6 Mojave and Universal Control v.1.7.6 seem to be the "latest & greatest". Everything is available on the download page of the SL 16.4.2, firmware is available in your PreSonus account.

You should take into consideration that the SL 16.4.2 is not only a "discontinued product", but that repairs are also not possible any longer. Check this article:

https://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/a ... -2-Classic

Use the SL 16.4.2 as long as it works, but if you need or want to use newer computer hardware and software, it's the time to think about something else. There are many options and does it need to be a mixer? Would an audio interface not be able to do the same job? What do you need for your work?

Thanks for your comments. I know the 1642 is old, but its still completely functional with my vintage iMac running high sierra. It’s business to discontinue stuff, but it is disappointing.

One of the features I love about this device is my ability to play back a sequence in my daw, of virtual instruments (and or real instrument tracks), then assign those channels to stereo sub outs on the mixer, that then feeds back into my daw sequence and allow me to simultaneously record a mix while playing back. Would this be possible with an audio interface?

A very relevant thread for me. I'm hoping to put my original 16.4.2 back into action after all these years. The big plans I had for it way back fell through due to extenuating circumstances and the unit never got any real use, it's essentially like new.

I still have a 2010 17" MBP that I'd held on to partially because it's "mated" with this unit but it would be nice if I could use one of my newer MBP's.

According to what I'm reading here perhaps the 2017 MBP w/ OS10.14.6 may still function with this unit, while the MBP I bought earlier this year w/ OS11.6 probably won't?

Non-Intel Mac's will NEVER work with FireWire, as the FireWire driver cannot be recompiled for M1 support.

Intel Mac's can only go to Mojave for Classic UC support. Anything past that will not install.
