I've just bought a 16.4.2AI, but my iPad with Surface 2.9 isn't connecting with UC 2.8 on my MacBook.

The 16.4.2AI board is updated with latest firmware (1.0.11979) and the latest available version of UC (2.8) is loaded on the MacBook with UC Surface (2.9) on the iPad.

The release notes show UC Surface (2.8) paired with UC (2.8) and similarly UC Surface (2.9) paired with UC (2.9) as per below:

Universal Control 2.8 Milestone Release Notes 7/10/18
● Universal Control (Mac/PC) - 2.8.0.48221
● UC Surface (iOS/Android) - 2.8.0.48221
● QMix-UC (iOS/Android) - 2.4.0.25212
● Capture (Mac/PC) - 2.4.0.48221

Or,

Universal Control 2.9 Milestone Release Notes 9/13/18
● Universal Control (Mac/PC) - 2.9.0.49213
● UC Surface (iOS/Android) - 2.9.0.49213
● QMix-UC (iOS/Android) - 2.5.0.48925
● Capture (Mac/PC) - 2.4.0.49213

But as we know, UC (2.9) not currently available, leaving a mismatch (Surface 2.9 UC 2.8) and I'm wondering if this is why iPad connectivity isn't working? For clarity, y current state is as follows:

Universal Control - 2.8.0.48221
UC Surface - 2.9.049213
16.4.2 Firmware: 1.0.11979
Looks like I need UC Surface (iOS/Android) - 2.8.0.48221

But from where?

What is my next step to gain iPad control?

I've also have QMix UC installed and that works perfectly between devices so Wi-Fi connectivity is not the problem.

But without access to either UC 2.9 to go forwards, or UC Surface 2.8 to jump backwards, am I left in limbo if version parity is the issue here?

My query is essentially trying to establish what versions of UC Surface (iPad) are compatible with UC (MacBook) and what's needed to get things up and running?

Comments/advice appreciated, bearing in mind I'm stuck with UC Surface 2.9 as nothing else (lower) is now available from iTunes, nor is UC 2.9 currently available either?

Is anyone else using 2.9 and 2.8 successfully together?

Well, here's the thing, your computer should have nothing to do with connecting your iPad to the 16.4.2AI mixer. It's all about the router. As long as the router delves out IP addresses to the mixer and the iPad that are in the same subnet, then it should work. Are you sure that your mixer and computer IP addresses are not set to static? Also sometimes the router needs to boot up before the mixer or the mixer will beat the router and create it own IP address that is in the wrong subnet.

For testing purposes I would disconnect and turn off the computer. Turn everything off actually. Then turn on the router and wait a couple minutes. Then turn on the AI mixer. Then turn on the iPad. And see if it will connect. Also, the mixer should be plugged in directly with an ethernet cable to the router LAN port.

Thanks for feedback Steve...

Here's the thing and I'm probably doing it all wrong, but basing my approach around how I successfully use my 16.0.2 with SL Remote.

Connectivity to the 16.4.2. is via the Firewire 800 cable from the MacBook.

iPad connection via a WiFi LAN created via on the MacBook - this works perfectly with the 16.0.2 and also runs QMix fine on the 16.4.2? But when I try to connect with UC Surface in this way, it is not seeing the 16.4.2, but does see it and displays it on the iPad and connects when using QMix in this way?

So I'm not actually using a router and perhaps this is where I'm going wrong?

Will revert to a dedicated router, but my intended approach (as per 16.0 2) is more attractive as less faff and less kit to rig...

Cheers for input!

PS: have just updated UC Surface to 2.9 so everything working to latest version!

There are some differences between AI and "classic" mixers, but I don't remember all details. My classic and AI time is simply too long ago. What I remember is that FireWire does not transport network information, therefore your mixer needs to join the (ad-hoc) network via WiFi dongle. This should work, but ad-hoc networks are not state-of-the-art any more... ;-) So, get a router and let it create the network (dynamic IP addresses), connect the mixer to the router - that's all you need to do. All mobile devices will now be able to control the mixer according to the permissions given to the individual devices.

Ya, the iPad used to run everything through Virtual StudioLive (UC) when you used your 16.0.2 with firewire. Therefore the iPad talked to the computer which then told the mixer what to do.

The 16.4.2ai no longer works like that. It talks directly to the network. You really do want to use a Wifi router for this and ethernet cable, it works much better than an ad hoc network. I'm not sure if an ad hoc network is capable of DHCP or not (this means delving out IP address to the network), also the wifi dongle would need to be used and it doesn't work very well.

Thanks a lot guys: advice much appreciated.

I was in too much of a hurry clearly, and now realise the difference between how the two boards operate. But I think what fooled me Steve, is that QMix works fine using the old 16.0.2 approach and that was the app I tried first and hence thought UC Surface should similarly work - doh!

Taking some R&R in France right now, but sourced a decent router before I left and am excited to try it as soon as I get back.

Meanwhile, I'll have to make do with cheese, red wine and that delicious crusty bread only the French bake...

More updates presently.
