I have a show coming up and I currently have (2) RM16AI's

BUT, I am thinking about borrowing a 32.4.2AI from a buddy, and I have a wireless router and the AVB router as well.

Can I control the 32.4.2AI with UC surface?? The same as I do my RM16AI's??

I have a 3-day music festival coming up and I usually pre-program the stage plots before the event.

Yes. No preamp control, but the rest will work. The difference between the RM's and AI consoles is you need to put the AI boards in fader locate mode to match the settings you have in UCS to what is physically on the mixer.

You have fat channel control, just not the preamp gain.

Ah, that's totally fine. That gets set during sound check anyway ;)

You can work as normal with UC Surface on tablet or computer, you don't need to tweak any knob or fader on the SL board EXCEPT the gain knobs.

"Locate mode" is very irritating, if you are not used to it, so just decide WHERE you want to mix (UC Surface or mixer) or devide the tasks. It can make sense to mix FOH by the mixer and the monitors by tablet. I would recommend to THINK in the traditional way. You have a physical board and it does everything for you. An iPad helps you to adjust the sound on stage, but ALL THE REST happens on the board with its knobs and faders. It's really fun, especially when tablet mixing has become standard. The mixing workflow on a physical board is so familiar... ;-)

One tip: Get the board a few days earlier to get used to it. Saving and recalling a scene works different (no need for a computer or tablet!). After the board has fully booted, you need to recall the scene you want to work with. The board always shows scene #1, although the actual settings are the settings from the last stored scene.

The scenes would probably not transfer over perfectly, depends how deep you go.

Sounds to me like you want to make a scene with an RM16 (or 2) connected to UC Surface, then recall that scene onto the SL32AI. I know the Subgroups work different and may be tied up to specific auxes (not sure), but it seems you could maybe get the channel names and maybe FAT channels started, question is how do they load into the SL32AI. Prolly 1 to 1, 2 to 2 . . . In which case you shouldn't need 2 RM16's because one of them is an actual 32 channel mixer, just set the names and EQ/Comps then save the scene, then try to load it on the SL32AI on game day.

You will need to allow control in the system menu of the SL32AI for any networked devices, RM does not do this because is doesn't have a hardware menu. . .
