I have successfully connected my new MacBook Pro to my StudioLive 16.4.2AI. I have not found any issues to date. I used the following Apple adapters.

Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter Apple part number MMEL2AM/A
Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter Apple part number MD464LL/A

I plugged them together and used a standard firewire 800 cable.

Same here, I could not find any definitive info (hadn't seen this thread yet) and decided to bite the bullet. Here's some proof that OP's suggestion also works on my setup (2016 MBP 15" & StudioLive 16.4.2 AI):

I have those same adapters and have not gotten it to work. It is super frustrating. Hoping there will be a work around soon. These are apple adapters btw, not knock offs. firewire - TB2, Tb2 - Tb3

Dell Computers with Thunderbolt need to use the StarTech TB3 adapter. Apple brand does not work.

Knowledge Base has all this info.
