I think I’m going to need an exchange on this one. When I called Sweetwater tech support the other day, I told them there is a high pitch and slight fluttering sound coming from the unit. He advised me to check my electricals at home for possible interference. I told him I would.

The electrician came yesterday and did a full inspection of the house and my office. All the wiring in the home is new from a year ago. We found no electrical issues, grounding issues, etc. I have several audio interfaces. Today I tested the others I have: PreSonus 26c, Focusrite 2i4 2nd gen, and Behringer UMC22. None of them emit that sound using the exact same cables and headphones. The problem solely lies with the new Revelator io24.

If you plug any pair of headphones into this unit, you will hear the high pitch sound immediately.

One more observation. In Universal Control software, the frequency of the high pitch changes whenever I change the Sample Rate. For example, when I go from 44.1kHz to 48.0kHz, the tone gets higher. The tone is the least noticeable at 88.2kHz.

Hello,

I have the same distiorted headphone audio issue with my Revelator IO24. I've tested the unit with two different headphone, several usb cables, and the distortion is always there.

If I open up a session in Protools or Studio One, audio from the Revelator's heaphone jack is distorted. But if I open the same session with my Apollo X6, on Protools or Studio One, the audio is free of distortion.I can also set the audio playback device to be my monitor through VoiceMeeter, and the audio playback from Studio One is distortion free.

Someone recommended that I mess around with my Bios, but that's too much for me. I'm not a programmer, but I'm putting my money is on a bad driver.

I have a new unit arriving from Sweetwater soon. I really hope I don't have to return both units.

Unfortunately, the noisy headphone output seems to be a general issue with all Revelator io24 units (or at least the current first batch).

I have observed it on two units myself and read a number of reviews mentioning it as well.

Thanks Guys for the responses.

Today, I plugged in my replacement from SweetWater and updated firmware. :cry:

I still have the issue with the new replacement.

In addition, I also own the Revelator Mic edition. It does not generate any of these noises.

Added troubleshooting: I plugged in both io24 units to my laptop to test (eliminating the ac connection) and no noise was noticed.

Problem only occurs with the io24 unit. Never have the problem with any of my other branded interfaces.

It's only when using the external headphone jack on the io24 that there is a problem.

Wondering if PreSonus is going to issue a statement and a fix. Surely they are aware of the issue by now.

The io24 probably needs more power than the Revelator mic and your USB ports can be a little low on power. Try one of these for double power and see if the noise is gone:

The other possible cause is noise from the computer's chassis, which can be blocked using a usb cable with ferrites.

Thanks for the help. The device is USB-c. If it needed one of those adapters, they should have included it. I won't buy an adapter to fix a poor design issue. But I don't think it's that. Did you read the entire reddit thread I referenced? It's narrowed down now to the headphone jack. Another person tried ferrite with failed results.

USB port requirements specify a minimum available output current @ 5V (0.5 A for USB 2.0, 0.9 A for USB 3.0, 3 A for USB-C) but not all computers fulfil the requirements. If an interface needs more current than what's available then the voltage will drop which will make the SMPS in the interface whine. Lossy USB cables can have the same effect. So the interface may be within spec but perhaps the available voltage/current isn't.

Thanks. I completely understand you. Looking at the reddit forum, you'll see lot of steps have been tried like what you suggest. And, I have other USB-C audio interfaces. None of those, using the exact same cabling, ports, and headphones exhibit this issue. The problem is solely with the io24 unfortunately.

I've got a 1/4" TRS to Dual Right Angle 1/4" TS Insert Cable along with a Presonus Studio 26c which is also USB 3.

Is there a way to run the io24 into the Studio 26c to isolate further?

Add my name to the list of those having this issue. I've tested multiple headphones (it's most noticeable in my Moondrop Starfield IEMs but I can hear it in my Philips SHP9500 open backs as well), multiple computers (Windows 10 desktop and MacBook Air), multiple USB cables, multiple 1/4" to 3.5mm adapters. I literally don't think there's anything else to test.

I have also tested 2 units because I thought the first was DOA, but when the second had the identical issue I also opened a ticket and have been going back and forth with support for a few days now. It's honestly quite frustrating because they clearly aren't even reading my replies in their entirety as they have asked for information I'd provided previously multiple times now.

I am a bit confused why everyone isn't having this issue, as clearly a bunch of people have them and aren't complaining. Is it possible it's just a defect in some units or is a design flaw the only answer?

I'm extremely disappointed with my first foray into PreSonus. My $80 (used) Native Instruments Komplete Audio 2 doesn't have any sort of issue like this. It's ridiculous for a $200 unit to do this and potentially require any sort of additional cabling or noise isolation (like the ground loop isolator noted in the reddit thread linked above). Either way, I hope they figure it out, resolve it, and issue RMAs/replacements because this unit is practically perfect on paper for my use case (and many other's).

Not speaking for Mark, but I am definitely on the latest firmware (1.13) and Universal Control releases (downloaded literally yesterday, though I can't verify the version exactly right now as I'm not in front of my systems). They made no difference. I've also tested on both macOS 11.5.2 (Intel MacBook Air) and Windows 10 (AMD Ryzen custom desktop).

I also got another reply in my support ticket, "Please consider using higher impedance headphones (200 ohms and above) and observe if the issue remains." I don't own headphones with impedance that high and if that's necessary, I think that's an absurd requirement.

Another thing which could make a difference is the gain structure. The balance between input gain and output gain will put you closer or further away from the interface's noise floor. Experiment e.g. with lower input gain and higher output gain as it's absolutely not necessary to have 75%+ input levels for good noise free recording.

Thanks for the tip. Can't speak for others. But I have tried that. I've got a lot of hours into this. Support has responded to my ticket and we are moving forward.

I have the dual power cable you suggested and a Ground Loop Noise Isolator cable coming in tomorrow for further testing.

Any way to use my existing 26c in the loop to aid testing?
