What would be the difference between the line return vs line inputs on the combi jacks when it comes to inputting outboard gear, for example? In my head, I was thinking the returns would be about bypassing any coloration from the preamps, but it looks like the line ins bypass that stage as well.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated, as I'm itching to get my desk wired in correctly!

Pretty sure I figured this out; the preamp out/line returns are about having an insert point, so you could record in with compression, for example. Otherwise, for reprinting with outboard, you would just use an output and then back in through the line combi jack.
But please chime in if I missed something!

Hi there,
I've always used 2 x external Golden Age Pre73 preamps and use the return on inputs 1 & 2 on my Presonus firestudio project and now my quantum 2626.
From my understanding they skip the preamp on the Presonus but you can still use the gain control to balance the level in.
I use just under half gain on the Presonus and adjust the Golden Age to stop any clipping.
Hope that's what you were wanting to know.
Cheers

Yep, that's exactly what I was after, bypassing the pre's. Thanks for reaffirming!

Are the 'line return' jacks on channels 1 and 2 balanced or unbalanced?
