Hey guys and gals!
I've recently been using my new 1810c for mostly playback and recording VST's "in the box" as well as guitars. Today I finally plugged a mic into it (a few different ones) I used a couple of condensers (w 48v) and a dynamic (w/o 48v) Ok, what's the deal on gain staging on the 1810c in Studio One? I have to CRANK the gains on the 1810c (70-80%) on channels 1-4 to get ANY kind of good signal into Studio One. Even then I have to "normalize audio" to get a good monitor response AFTER vocals have been recorded. Is this normal for these Studio USB's? I mean, holy crap! Thanks |

The standard rule of thumb for recording levels in the digital realm is to keep your levels at -18 to -12 dB average with occasional peaks going no higher than -6 dB.
There will be no problem at all getting to those levels with the 1810c. If you are having trouble hearing your recordings after that, the solution is as simple as turning up your speakers/headphones. |

Thanks for the response. I get all that. My concern is that is it “normal” to have to crank the input(s) on the 1810c to 80% just to reach that -18 x -12db of input?

With a dynamic mic, yes you may need to add that much gain, but with a condenser, no not so much.
But it also depends on what your source material is. What are you micing? How far away from the sound-source is your mic? Have you tried a different cable? Also, as long as you are not turning the mic preamps up so much that they introduce noise, you should not be terribly worried about it. They may not be my favorite preamps in the world but one good thing they have going for them is they are pretty quiet at the higher levels. |
