Q on the newly announced USB-C interfaces

I don't keep up with everything so please lend me a hand and let me know what's what with the new interfaces.

Are the following statements true?

1) USB-C 3.1 is NOT the same as Thunderbolt
2) Although the USB-C 3.1 is faster than previous USB, it is not as fast as Thunderbolt
3) Consequently, Thunderbolt should provide less latency than USB-C 3.1
4) The new Presonus USB-C 3.1 interfaces are backward compatible with USB 3 or 2 and can be used with older PCs but will not provide the speed enhancement unless the PC either has 3.1 native to the motherboard or an add-in card on a desktop
5) Thunderbolt on a PC only works if it is native to the motherboard - add-in cards don't work

1. Physically port compatable but not TB.
2. True
3. True
4. True
5 True, a lot of folks don't get this
6. Wait, there was no six

You obviously done your homework

4. In regards to this, according to Dom at the NAMM show these interfaces are using USB 2.0 transmission, only diff is they are using the USC -C connection port.

I was hoping they were using the USB 3.1 Gen 2 transmission but nope, its the same old USB 2.0 in last years model with a diff USB-C port

Aww! Disappointing

The answers to some of your questions are more involved than just simple "true or false."

Thanks for sharing this link. There is a lot of confusion out there. They PHYSICALLY share the same port but two different animals. This article explains it pretty well.

Yeah and if it's true these interfaces are not true USB 3.1 then that is a letdown. I was actually looking at them pretty seriously.

But honestly, USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough for probably 99% of audio users out there.

RME Babyface use USB 2 so it's possible they have improved drivers to equal the RTL of those units maybe I'm asking too much but I would jump on one if that was the case.

If you compare the technical specs of the new boxes to the old, they seem to be exactly the same. Not surprised about USB 2.0, as that is how it works on the silver 2|4 w/ USBC that was already out. This looks to be just a connector change and cosmetic update.

I was wondering if that wasn't the case... what's the point of going USB-C if it's not also going to USB 3.1?

If that's true then the price-drops on the silvers you can get now would be a great deal.

New black face and a USB-C port, that is all

I have an 1824c and it's really a great interface. I can get very low latency (not even noticeable) and the pre-amps are great.

We have a full review of the unit here - https://youtu.be/MnH_j65MUb8

The truth is USB 3.0 doesn't really add anything for audio. It would allow higher bandwidth, but it's not going to drastically reduce latency. You're still dealing with the USB stack and isochronous data.

Thunderbolt is a different story because it communicates with the CPU in a different manner.
