Is there a known issue when you use a StudioLive III series mixer with an external power conditioner and use that for powering on/off the unit instead of the built-in switch on the unit? I have seen a few times where the unit will attempt to start up and then just hang once the progress bar fills up on the loading screen. This can usually be fixed by powering the unit off and then on again using the switch on the unit instead of the external power conditioner. Is there anything 'special' that happens when engaging the power switch on the unit? Is it necessary to use the soft power feature before powering off the unit to ensure that is can power on successfully the next time?

Thanks!

There is nothing 'special' happening. The soft-power function simply allows the mixer to save its current settings, which allows the mixer to start with the exact same settings again. When the "Auto Save" is done and NOTHING has been changed in mixer and network, you can turn off the mixer. Auto Save is happening every 45 to 60 seconds.

And that's the catch. Autosave takes a fraction of a second so you have to be unlucky to catch the mixer in the act, but you can. Chances increase if you have some sort of a 'pull all faders down and flip the power switch' routine because the mixer will attempt to store those fader changes, and well...

Cutting the power during autosave will result in a corrupted 'actual settings' file. The mixer has a backup plan so depending on the extent of the damage to the actual settings file it will default to that. It's the 'slightly dented' files that may land you where you are. The soft power off function (from the mixer's menu) prevents all this by first storing every setting, user preset, etc. etc. and then putting the mixer in a dormant state, ready to have the power cut any way you like :)

If your mixer recovers by itself then remember to use the soft power off function next time, before cutting the power. If you mixer is stuck then hold the FX button (below the display) when switching on the power. It will perform a factory reset (clearing all user data too) but you'll keep your current firmware. It is what it is

Actually, it did the same thing when I turned it on today even after I used the Soft Power feature before shutting it down yesterday. Should I do a factory reset?

Yes (unfortunately, because that will also erase all your user settings).

If that's a big problem and especially if your problems started after a firmware update then try a firmware revert first. Hold the Home button during power-up. This will revert the mixer's firmware to the version it had when it left the factory, but it will keep your user settings. Update the firmware next, to the latest version available. Tip: don't use USB for the update because it's slow. A LAN connection to the Control port works much faster.

If all this doesn't make the problem go away then a service ticket is the next step.
