I have a Presonus 32R that has 32 physical input channels and 18 physical output channels (16+2). However, on macOS when I look at the device in the Audio MIDI Setup is shows that it has 64 Input Channels and 64 Output channels. The promotional material says that it has "continuously bidirectional 128-channel (64x64) USB". So:

1. What does "continuously bidirectional 128-channel (64x64) USB" actually mean?

2. How do the 64 Input channels and 64 Output channels seen in the Audio MIDI Setup actually map to the 32 physical input channels and the 16+2 output channels?

3. As an extension of question (2), the physical outputs are 2 x XLR outputs and 16 x 1/4" output. Where exactly are they mapped in the 64 output channels.

Thank you for the help 😊

Hi and welcome to this forum :)

Don't try to read too much into add slogans. To answer your questions:

1. The StudioLive mixers are (also) audio interfaces so they continuously receive from all usb input channels and send to all usb output channels, 64 of each, even if it's silence. That's different from say a harddrive which sends and receives in bursts and goes to sleep when there's no activity.

2. Up to you. Inside the mixer you have the option to change the mapping/patching for most of the usb inputs and outputs. Per default the 32 mixer channels are sent to and received from the computer via USB1-32, Main is sent to the computer via USB39-40 and the Aux outputs via USB41-56. Dig into the mixer's menus and you'll find more.

3. In normal mixer mode the computer doesn't get direct usb access to the mixer's physical outputs. You have to return signals to one or more of the 32 mixer channels and/or aux inputs instead, and then use the mixer to 'mix' them to mixer outputs. Alternatively you can switch the mixer to interface mode. This will route USB39-54 from the computer directly to aux outputs 1-16 on the mixer (fixed mapping). There's no direct usb access from the computer to the mixer's main output.

PS. USB37-38 are the recommended usb channels for returning the computer's audio (or your DAW's main mix) to the mixer. This will (default) feed the signal to the Digital Return channel on the mixer.
