FX A to FX D (H) controlled per channel via User Mode
A unique feature of the Series III mixers with Fat Channel scribble strips, encoders and buttons is the User Mode, which allows creating own custom Fat Channel controls. Up to now I never saw the need to use User Mode, but there is indeed one special option, which makes the User Mode to a really great feature: When you assign scribble strip/encoder/button 1-4 to the four FX sends (1-8 and FX A-H on the 64S), you can change effect sends per selected channel.

All you need to do is press the "USER" button and then press and hold any of the eight Fat Channel buttons. The touchscreen will show the list of functions you can assign to the buttons (right side) and encoders (left side). Under "Buttons" scroll down to FX A and confirm with "Done". That's it. ;-)

What this does is really simple and effective: Imagine selecting channel "Snare" on your mixer. Pressing the USER buttons adds the four/eight effect sends to the Fat Channel encoders, so you can increase or decrease any effect for snare without the need to select the effect fader banks. You can even move several encoders simultaneously. This feature will support your workflow and make your mixing faster and more effective.

There is a second way to get to FX Sends on encoders: Press the button Aux Sends and the "Next" button two times (four times on the 64S). The 4/8 Aux Sends will show up in the scribble strips. The 16/32 Flex Mixes are displayed first.

Using Ctrl Click Resets (UC & Studio One)
As you may know, UC Surface and Studio One share the same developers in Hamburg/Germany and "Ctrl Click" (press and hold Ctrl on keyboard, select encoder or button, left click mouse) belongs to the basic features of Studio One. This is the standard way to reset settings, or better: nulling parameters. No wonder that this feature is also heavily used in UC Surface.

The need to reset settings has to do with Fat Channel settings mostly. You come to a point where you want to reset e.g. the equalizer or parts of it. Try the Ctrl Click method. You will get the complete equalizer reset in less than 5 seconds... But this method does not consider settings you have saved. It will always set things back to factory settings, which can not be altered.

You can reset via Ctrl Click:

* All encoders of the Fat Channel of inputs and outputs, including Pre/Gain, HPF, Delay
* All faders in sends and returns
* All frequency faders of the GEQs
* All FX settings

Naming Network Devices in UC
All members of the ecosystem (consoles, rack mixers, stageboxes, personal mixers) can have their own "nickname". UC Surface makes the naming very easy. Go to -> Settings -> Network. You will see the mixer or stagebox listed under "AVB Inputs". Double click on the name and change it. If you want to change the console's name, double click on the name in the rider and change the name. The units will remember their new name.

Press & hold input source and select multiple channels
Many people complain that it's such a work to change "all" inputs on a StudioLive console from Analog to USB/AVB/SD. There is a way to change 32 input sources in less than 5 seconds. PreSonus has invented a press & hold function for several buttons. If you want to change 32 analog inputs to USB (example), press and hold the USB button in the Fat Channel section. The Select buttons of all channels will start blinking in red (color for USB). Wipe across the Select Buttons, use the "Next Page" button to get access to the next channels, release the USB button. That's it. Now all 32 channels are changed to USB as input source. You can also change some channels to USB, some to AVB, some to SD. Just press and hold the source button and select the input channels for that source. Then continue with the next source button and select the channels.

SD Card control via UC Surface
If you have ever tried to create a new SD Card multitrack recording session on the touchscreen of your mixer, you might have had the wish for a better solution. Which is already available, when you have a tablet or a computer at hand. SD Card Capture shows up in UC Surface and allows you to fill out the Artist/Performance/Location fields and recall stored sessions. And you can arm tracks and start and stop and save the recording. The Virtual Soundcheck function is also available.
