More than 1500 views - I never thought this thread could be interesting for so many people. But because of the growing interest I would like to add some more links to videos worth to listen (and watching...). Most of the vidoes are not explicite in-ear mixes, but their mix contains everything needed for a good in-ear mix. The videos will give you an idea how in-ear monitoring can sound and how a good sound can support the musicians. And certainly, the better the musicians perform, the better the sound. This will never change...

Most of the videos are missing "information" about the room and the audience. The musicians can hear well what happens on stage, but they have no idea how it sounds in the room and how the music / their playing translates to the room. This is not only the sound guy's job. In many situations musicians have to adjust their playing to the room. Two ambience microphones (or more) are a must.

Enjoy the new videos!

i have my band that have 2 earmix units using mixes 41-48 and 49-56. I need to figure out just how to route things on my sl3 because I need to also use the physical aux mixes to run a couple of stage monitors directly from the board like old school. So I need to run earmix flex and stage monitor without earmix using physical auxes on the board. Hope that makes sense. The videos are awesome but I’m not seeing anywhere in them how to do this
User avatar
by wahlerstudios on Sun Jul 28, 2019 5:53 pm
Yes, it will be my pleasure to help you figure this out. Thanks for asking. This is the default AVB setting:

AVB 01-08 = MICS
AVB 09-16 = MICS
AVB 17-24 = MICS
AVB 25-32 = MICS
AVB 33+34 = AUX IN 1
AVB 35+36 = AUX IN 2
AVB 37+38 = TAPE IN
AVB 39+40 = MAIN L/R
AVB 41-48 = AUX 01-08
AVB 49-56 = AUX 09-16
AVB 57-64 = (not used)

What you need to make is a simple shift. Your auxes 1-8 stay where they are, but auxes 9-16 should be routed to AVB 57-64 in order to have them on channels 9-16 of the EarMixers. Then AVB sends 49-56 can be filled with 8 signals like instruments (not mixes). This is the routing:

AVB 41-48 = AUX 01-08 = wedges
AVB 49-56 = [AVB 01-08] = EarMix channels 1-8
AVB 57-64 = AUX 09-16 = EarMix channels 9-16

With this routing you can run 8 wedges on stage (or in-ear mixes) and feed two and more EarMixers. The EarMixers get their signal through Ethernet. Here are two configurations without AVB Switch:

Console -> NSB Stagebox -> EarMix -> EarMix...
Console -> EarMix -> EarMix -> Rack Mixer

or with AVB Switch:
Console -> AVB Switch -> Rack Mixer, EarMix, EarMix...

Hope this helps.

Soon this thread will have 3000 views, therefore I am going to add something very special this time: links to concerts with at least one hour duration. It's not uncommon that concerts and festivals are recorded with an stereo audio feed from FOH. Sometimes there is a real mix happening during the recording, but very often the mix is left as it is.

Mostly there is only one camera involved, but there can also be post-production and HD video. All these recordings/videos have in common that you can follow what is happening on stage and that you are listening diretcly to the source(s) the musicians were listening to. The recording do NOT present dedicated in-ear mixes, but they give an idea how you can create in-ear mixes for musicians and singers (for YOUR band...!).

You will find a lot of interesting music from unknown artists, but there will also be some big names... ;-)

3500 views and Christmas, this must be celebrated. ;-) Here are some more of the longer videos:

ADRIAN BELEW 2019 04 17 Ardmore Music Hall 4K
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdJ5-tGw2t4
Intersting music - totally dry sound, good balanc e of ambience microphones.

Muscle Tough - 4K - 06.22.17 - Ardmore Music Hall - Full Set
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXBthb8rGl8
Three instruments, ambience microphones, experimental music.

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - Montreal Jazz Festival (2018)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC1N7rkKkfg
Special in all respects. Drums is played on a "drumitar".

SARAH MCKENZIE. JAZZ SAN JAVIER 2018.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-e5UvA3MkM
Deterrent example for a mono "mix". Sounds like a matrix mix with "everything" in it. No fun.

Booker T Jones - 11-19-2019 - Ardmore Music Hall - Ardmore, PA - 4K, matrix audio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AOcl0jPXJk
Also a matrix mix, but a much better one. Not full stereo, but fitting to the music.

Larkin Poe on Audiotree Live (Full Session)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAqeBFN4axA
Not a concert, but a live music video with a few people as audience. Always interesting to listen to, how the in-ear sound is mixed.

The 1975 - Live at Reading Festival 2019 (Full Show)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrqBrTd6pb0
Quite a variety of styles and sounds. A lot of ambience. Imposing show, by the way.

The 1975 - Full Show (Live @ Pohoda Festival 2019)

The same show with a different, more direct sound.

Studio Session and interviews.

JRAD with John Mayer 10-13-17
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD1KxtEGiy8
A lot to listen to...

Joe Bonamassa Live at Carnegie Hall An Acoustic Evening 2017
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz5vpT_BcMM
Lots of acoustic instruments & percussion, very interesting band and singers, good microphones, good in-ear sound, fun to listen (and watch)... The reverb tries to imitate the big hall, but to my taste it's too much and too dark on his voice.

Paul Carrack Live At Rockpalast 2007
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjHBIqUk-7c
A concert recorded in a music club, but this really sound great. A dream of an in-ear sound.

wahlerstudios wroteJust yesterday PreSonus has released a series of five videos about a VERY complex setup of EarMixers. This is nothing for beginners, but if you understand (also acoustically) what is explained, you get an idea how flexible the system is.

The videos are entitled

01 - Setup APPROVAL
02 - Naming & Assigning AVB APPROVAL
03 - Setting up AUX Mixes APPROVAL
04 - Individual Earmix Routing APPROVAL
05 - Setting Up Each Earmix APPROVAL

and can be found here: https://www.presonus.com/videos/player.

Basically, the EarMix deals with two banks of 8 signals, which can consist of input channels, auxes, subgroups, matrixes and main mix - in any combination and order. You just need to route the signals to the 8 banks. Multiple routing is also possible. If you want the guitar of input 5 (example) to be separately available in several banks, just route it ADDITIONALLY to AVB sends 10, 20, 25, 35, 40 and 55...

The AVB sends can be

1-8
9-16
17-24
25-32
33-40
41-48
49-56
57-64

For any EarMixer you can individually select two banks of AVB sends. One can receive 1-8 and 9-16, the other 25-32 and 57-64 and a third one 17-24 and 49-56. And so on. "None" is also an option as selection, which means that one half of the EarMixer's inputs is not used,

I'm not being able to find the videos. Is there a new link? videos were removed?

4,000 views… Never thought that this thread would find so much interest, but I also know, there is some good music to find here… ;-) I would like to point out that the videos do not necessarily represent in-ear mixes. The sound your hear mostly is the resource for all kind of mixes used in a particular concert. The recordings allow you to imagine "your" personal in-ear mix and get an idea how in-ear mixes can sound in your band or group. That's all. Enjoy the new (long) videos!

You have to listen to this music loud. There is so much in it. Old, but so fresh.

Keyboarders will like this one... Otherwise the mix is a little advanturous.

Oscar Peterson - Montreal Jazz Festival 2004
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElaZ4tHd0GQ
This has nothing to do with in-ear monitoring, but this is how in-ear monitoring should sound... So pure, so natural, so transparent, so inspiring.

Everything live, no overdubs... - you hear pure quality.

Great topic, I only wish you could create videos because I indeed watch those videos
and thought hey this is not one size fit all, I wouldn't use my in earmix completely like this
and the videos still have missing information for people who only have the rack mount version.

Why not make videos dedicated to only the mixer version, and the rack version and the rack
version is only uc surface (software) related, why not use a studio with live musicians and do
a live run through, while I understand you're never going to make everybody happy, I feel they
drop the ball by not making more in-depth material videos with this unit.

Thank you very much for your well thoughts about the use of the material.

My ideal setup
1-Kick
2-Snare
3-Tom high
4-Tom mid
5-Tom Low
6- Bass
7-Organ Left
8-Organ Right or Organ Drum bass (in case you don't have a bass player)
9-Piano Keys Left
10-Piano Keys Right
11-lead guitar (I believe you said this should be stereo but I need more education why)
12-Lead vocal
13-Backgroun vocal 1
14-Background vocal 2
15-Mpc click track
16-talk back mic

1-Kick
2-Snare
3-LINK Overhead or Drum Mix Left
4-LINK Overhead or Drum Mix Right
5-Bass
6-Organ Drum Bass
7-LINK Organ Left
8-LINK Organ Right
9-LINK Keys Left
10-LINK Keys Right
11-Guitar
12-Lead Vocal
13-Background Vocal 1
14-Background Vocal 2
15-LINK Subgroup C+D Left (Click, Tracks, Talkback, Reverb, Ambience Microphones)
16-LINK Subgroup C+D Right

Your concept is good, but you could improve some details to make the use of EarMixers more effective. Most important (for users) will be to use the link function for stereo input channels. Nobody wants to adjust two single channels for the "same" sound event. Then, use a subgroup (audio unrouted from Main L/R) as "bridge" for multiple functional sound events. You can also add reverb and input channels to this subgroup (see screenshot). Guitar normally is mono, but you have two keys in stereo, so you should also make your guitar player happy. Unfortunately this setup will not allow stereo for guitar.

And remember that left is right and right is left... ;-)

I only have a studiolive 32R I don't have the physical mixer.

1-Kick (Input channel 1 right ?
2-Snare (Input channel 2 right?
3-LINK Overhead or Drum Mix Left (Input 3?
4-LINK Overhead or Drum Mix Right( Input 4?
5-Bass (Input 5?
6-Organ Drum Bass (Input 6?
7-LINK Organ Left (Input 7 ?
8-LINK Organ Right(Input 8?
9-LINK Keys Left (Input 9?
10-LINK Keys Right(Input 10?
11-Guitar(Input 11? but you suggested I should make this stereo I believe
12-Lead Vocal(Input 12?
13-Background Vocal 1(Input 13?
14-Background Vocal 2(Input 14?
15-LINK Subgroup C+D Left (Click, Tracks, Talkback, Reverb, Ambience Microphones) (Input 15?
16-LINK Subgroup C+D Right(Input 16?

( I do know with flex mix you can switch things up this is why I'm asking for clarity with the input channel, and I believe the Avb Sends depends on this as well, I heard you mention a perfect use is the 57-64 Avb but with all my instruments would that be possible? )

Your concept is good, but you could improve some details to make the use of EarMixers more effective. Most important (for users) will be to use the link function for stereo input channels. Nobody wants to adjust two single channels for the "same" sound event. (Nobody Wants to adjust two single channels for the same sound event? (I don't quite understand this part, I work in a church and we have two keyboard players, for me I like hearing the piano/keys player, I'm the organist, so can you tell me how my setup is a problem for the earmix?) Then, use a subgroup (audio unrouted from Main L/R) as "bridge" for multiple functional sound events. You can also add reverb and input channels to this subgroup (see screenshot). Guitar normally is mono, but you have two keys in stereo, so you should also make your guitar player happy. Unfortunately this setup will not allow stereo for guitar. (So are you saying make the guitar stereo so the guitar player can use the FX? )

32R CH 01 | AVB 01 | 16M CH 01 Kick mono
32R CH 02 | AVB 02 | 16M CH 02 Snare mono
32R AUX 15 or SUB A | AVB 03 | 16M CH 03 Overhead or Drum Mix Left linked
32R AUX 16 or SUB B | AVB 04 | 16M CH 04 Overhead or Drum Mix Right linked
32R CH NN | AVB 05 | 16M CH 05 Bass mono
32R CH NN | AVB 06 | 16M CH 06 Organ Drum Bass mono
32R CH NN | AVB 07 | 16M CH 07 Organ Left linked
32R CH NN | AVB 08 | 16M CH 08 Organ Right linked
32R CH NN | AVB 09 | 16M CH 09 Keys Left linked
32R CH NN | AVB 10 | 16M CH 10 Keys Right linked
32R CH NN | AVB 11 | 16M CH 11 Guitar mono
32R CH NN | AVB 12 | 16M CH 12 Lead Vocal mono
32R CH NN | AVB 13 | 16M CH 13 Background Vocal 1 mono
32R CH NN | AVB 14 | 16M CH 14 Background Vocal 2 mono
32R SUB C | AVB 15 | 16M CH 15 Click etc. left linked
32R SUB D | AVB 16 | 16M CH 16 Click etc. right linked

It doesn't need a console. The rack mixers 32R and 24R have identical input and output features and capacities, there are no limits for AVB and USB routing. I would suggest to stay with AVB output sends 1-8 and 9-16 as "carriers" for the EarMixers, because everhing else will get too difficult, especially when you're new to AVB routing. All channels and buses of the rack mixer have an AVB input and an AVB output, which can be routed to any input or output. If you have kick and snare on channels 1 and 2, they will by default send their AVB output signal to AVB "O" 1 and 2. The next step would be to route the AVB output of (linked) Aux 15+16 or (linked) Subgroup A+B to AVB outputs 3 and 4. Then Bass to AVB "O" 5, Organ Bass to AVB "O" 6, and so on. The list ends with (linked) Subgroup C+D routed to AVB "O" 15 and 16.

Stereo for guitar would need a free channel, which is not available in this approach. But there are two channels for bass, which will not be used simultaneoulsy, so you could move guitar to channels 5 and 6 and bass/organ bass to channel 11.

Is any of this possible to stimulate using virtual instruments and or Stem audio tracks and routing
them to this channels virtually? I hope this is not a dumb question?
If it is, I will just have to use my drum machine and dummy instrument until I get to my church
this weekend.
