Hey all,
I have a classic 16.4.2 I use all the time in the studio only environment and I have very little complaints on the SL mic pre's, Im wondering if Its worth the 2k to upgrade to the new series III? I have spoken with different music sales companies and it seem they have an agenda..One says oh get the midas, other says get the series 3? Im not sure what the next step up would be in the studio world. I looked at outboard pre's and converters and it doesn't make sense to spend 3k for 8 mic pres..or does it? My setup is a strictly personal studio for me and occasional 3-5 piece band with live drums. Some have suggested the x32 compact? not sure about that one either.
While I am at it let me say I had a Great River MP2NV That I could for the world not hear 2k worth of difference on my very nice headphones or monitors on my vocals..with very nice mics from the SL board..That is saying a lot for SL, I assume I bypassed the pres by going insert in.

Thanks for any ideas. Harry

Hi Harry. I originally had the Firestudio Tube, which has the same mic pres as your board. I can tell you without a doubt that the series 3 pres sound a lot better than what you have.

The series 3 will also get you daw control, slated to be ready before the end of the year last I heard. If the control is anything like what we have with the CS18, it will be very tightly integrated. Using the CS18, it is as easy as pressing the daw button to control S1, and also 3rd party plugs, then turning off daw mode to control the mixer, making it very simple to switch from control of the performance mixes through the board, then bouncing to daw control. Its pretty sweet.

Like I said, daw control is not there yet, but coming soon. I think the integration with Studio One, if that is the daw you use, gives it a big leg up on the other mixers you are looking at. At this price point, I don't think you will get a better package of pres and control for the daw.

There is a great thread about the integration of CS18AI with Studio One, published by specialist "themuzic" (aka Johnny Geib), whose HST videos are very popular. You find the feature list here: https://forums.presonus.com/viewtopic.php?f=233&t=22273. This video is also very informative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy-e36IL3GY.

The question is if the Series III mixers will see this kind of integration of Studio One - or even more. But we need to be aware that it also can be less. We will see it after it is available, so if a Series III board needs to be a controller for Studio One in your studio, you should still wait a few weeks (or months). Only then you can be sure that you get what you want. Never buy a product for features it does not have, regardless of any "not yet" or "soon" or "maybe" or "hopefully"...

The preamps of the AI and the Series III mixers indeed are a different "class" than the preamps of the classic boards. You hear the difference right away.

Thanks for the replys, DAW control is not really an issue yet...unless that means I can arm say 5 tracks for automation and use the S3 to control all 5 tracks at one time? I assume that's why it has touch sensitive faders? I have a faderport that does the same..would be nice if the S3 acts like a huge faderport? BTW I use Cubase 5 on a PC. I came from nuendo way long ago to a more simplistic lifestyle. I like simple and clean.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. Control for Studio One will come first. The date for 3rd party daw implementation has not been mentioned yet.
