Manufacture Date Codes.... how to read them?

Hi gang,
I purchased a brand new ADL 600 from Adarama this week. Unfortunately, it is dead-on-arrival. I looked at the Serial Number sticker on the bottom and saw the date code, but I can't make sense of it. What is the date of manufacture of this ADL 600 (see code below)....

I interpret that date code to be January 13, 2006. If that's true, I just bought a 10yr old product, sold as new. Hopefully I'm just not interpreting the code correctly. Thoughts?
