PreSonus Releases AVB Cards for it's StudioLive AI Consoles (firmware update required) as well as a firmware update to enable AVB functionality in cards shipped with RM Mixers. The firmware for both mixers can be found in your MyPreSonus account for each product as well as release notes for further details regarding this release.
Procedures and FAQs Regarding Initial AVB Release for StudioLive AI Mixers
The first implementation of AVB for the StudioLive AI Console Mixers and RM AI Series Mixers provides 1:1 channel AVB connection between one single AI Console and one RM Mixer. Any combination of a single AI Console and a single RM Mixer can be connected together over AVB with this update to send each channel from the RM to it’s corresponding channel on the Console or vice-versa.
AVB Connection Notes
There are two supported connection scenarios for this initial AVB implementation:
Direct Connection: An ethernet cable connected from the AVB option card of the AI Console directly to the AVB option card of the RM Mixer. Both mixers must also have a WiFi connection to a WiFi router in order to provide IP addressing, permit control between mixers, and allow WiFi access for UC Surface devices. (Important! The only two AI mixers connected to the WiFi network should be the two connected over AVB. Any other AI mixers on the network can cause connection issues in this initial release.)
AVB Switch network: An Ethernet cable from the AVB option card of each mixer (AI Console and RM Mixer) connected to a supported AVB switch. The AVB switch must also be connected to a WiFi router in order to provide IP addressing and allow WiFi access for UC Surface devices. WiFi connection on the mixers is not required in this configuration. (Note: PreSonus has tested this connection type with the following switches and at this time officially supports these specific switches: MOTU AVB Switch, and Extreme Networks Summit X440-8t / Software: ExtremeXOS 184.108.40.206 / Hardware: Rev 11.0)
NOTE: Both the AI Console and the RM Mixer connected over AVB must be set to either 44.1kHz or 48kHz sample rate for AVB operation. HD sample rates are not supported for AVB audio for this release.
REMINDER: The AI family mixers only support 2.4GHz wireless networks. WiFi routers should be configured accordingly.
When an AI Console and an RM Mixer are connected via AVB, Firewire device connection to a Mac or PC for recording and playback is only supported for the StudioLive AI Console. The StudioLive AI Console will be seen as an audio device (PreSonus FireStudio) on a Mac or PC with Universal Control AI installed, but Universal Control AI will not show the mixer as connected via Firewire for control. In order to control the mixer from the recording computer with this AVB firmware release, it is necessary for both the computer and the mixer to be connected to the same Wireless/Ethernet connected network.
Q: Can other AI Mixers be present on the same network as the AI Console and RM Mixer connected to each other over AVB?
A: No, the only AI mixers present on your network should be the AI Console and RM Mixer connected to each other over AVB. Computers, iPads, iPhones, etc. can be present on the same network.
Q: Why can’t I hear the Main Mix of my RM Mixer on the RM’s Main Outs when connected to an AI Console over AVB?
A: When an RM Mixer is connected to an AI Console over AVB, the only streams that will pass to the RM’s Main Outs are the Main Mix of the AI Console. With this implementation, stage speakers can be connected directly to the RM’s Main Outs for a much shorter cable run so the RM’s Main Outs will receive only the FOH Main Mix from the AI Console. The RM’s Mono Out will output a sum of the AI Console’s Main L/R Mix. To monitor the RM Main Mix, the RM’s Headphone Out can be used.
Q: Can I record audio when my AI Console is connected to my RM Mixer over AVB?
A: Yes, in this initial release the AI Console’s audio can be connected to a Mac or PC via firewire and can be set as the computer’s audio device for recording and playback in Capture, Studio One, or other software. AVB streams sent to the AI Console from the RM Mixer can be recorded. Recording via AVB connection to a computer from the AVB network is not supported in this initial release.
Q: Is it possible to Store/Recall Scene information for both the AI Console and the RM Mixer simultaneously when they are connected together over AVB?
A: Yes. If you Store a Scene on your AI Console (the FOH mixer) while it is connected over AVB to your RM Mixer it will save all parameters for both mixers. When the Scene is Recalled from the AI Console, the stored parameters for both mixers will load. Scenes Stored/Recalled locally on the RM will only load the parameters for the RM.
Note: In this release, scenes saved and loaded in VSL-AI only store and recall scene data for the AI Console. The same is true in Capture when using Capture Sync features. Capture Mix Scenes only store and recall scene data for the AI Console connected via network. For more information, please see our knowledge base article on Capture Sync
Q: If the AI Console controls 48V and Phase for all RM Channels when connected over AVB, how does it control these functions locally on it’s own channels?
A: Switching between local AI Console and RM control of these functions is handled by use of the D)) (Digital Return) buttons on each channel of the AI Console. When the D)) button is engaged on any AI Console channel, 48V and Phase buttons for that channel control the corresponding channel parameters of the RM. When the D)) button is disengaged on any AI Console channel, 48V and Phase buttons for that channel control these functions locally on the AI Console.
Q: If the Talk (On/Off) button on the AI Console controls the Talkback (On/Off) button on the RM Mixer when connected to it over AVB, do the Talkback Assign buttons on the AI Console control the RM Mixer Talkback Assign buttons also?
A: No, even though the Talk (On/Off) button on the AI Console controls the Talkback (On/Off) button on the RM Mixer when connected to it over AVB, the AI Console’s Talkback Assign buttons retain local AI Console button functionality. The Talkback Assign buttons in UC Surface still control the Talkback Mic routing to the RM Outputs.
Note: The Talkback Mic for the RM connected over AVB can be sourced from the AI Console’s Talkback Mic input by selecting “AVB TB” as the Talkback Source in UC Surface Device Settings for the RM Mixer.
Q: Which AVB network switches have been tested and are currently approved for use with AVB enabled PreSonus devices?
A: PreSonus will be conducting ongoing testing of AVB capable network switches as more come to market, in order to verify those makes and models that function correctly with our AVB enabled products. This page may be updated from time to time, so check back often.
Currently, the following AVB network switches have been tested and confirmed to work with our Phase 1 AVB implementation of a single AI console connected via AVB to a single RM mixer

The following AVB network switches are not currently working or supported, but are currently being tested and are expected to work and be supported in the future
1) Netgear GS716Tv3 16-port with AVB Firmware: Currently not functional, but we are working with Netgear to determine what needs to be configured for these to work
2) Netgear GS724Tv4 24-port with AVB Firmware: Currently not functional, but we are working with Netgear to determine what needs to be configured for these to work
3) Netgear GS748Tv5 48-port with AVB Firmware: Currently not functional, but we are working with Netgear to determine what needs to be configured for these to work
