Our Sound Guy wanted PFL while out front mixing????
Maybe this has come up with others, and as there's no CUE to Return B (being digital), I got this working well using a spare In-ear wireless system.
First make up or buy a short 1/4" TRS jack to Left & Right RCA and connect it from the Phone Out to the Tape In (Comes up as Return A).

Set up the Cue and Solo settings with Cue Source as "SOLO", the Phones Monitor on CUE, the Solo In Place "OFF" and the Solo PFL to "ON" (we don't want to Mute any other channels during a show).

Then put a pair of Aux Sends into a Stereo Pair and hook up the In-Ear transmitter to these Aux Outputs. On that Mix Out make sure ONLY Return A fader is up.

Now the FOH Engineer has PFL to their In-Ears wherever they may be in the venue.

Fairly simple really, and it would be a little easier if the was a Cue to Return B, but this works just fine.

Want to have it even more simple? Just connect the headphone output and the wireless transmitter... ;-)

I would like to add another solution for some more options. The idea is to use two iPads. One mobile and one as a kind of "small" FOH. What you need is an iPad 2, an Alesis iO-Dock and an extension cable (can be two XCLR cables) from the headphone output of the rack mixer to the Alesis dock. The Alesis dock is now used as (really powerful) headphone amplifier. You can also connect your wireless in-ear device there.

The second function and feature is the use of Smaart on the iPad (AudioTools with Smaart add-on, http://www.studiosixdigital.com). The audio resource is the stereo signal coming from the headphone output of the rack mixer. The Alesis iO dock "splits" this signal to its own headphone section and to the signal going to the iPad, which means that you hear and see the identical signal. Whatever you "solo", you hear it in the headphones and you see it in Smaart. Use the second "mobile" iPad for UC Surface.

It's a pity that PreSonus never succeded to bring some kind of analyzer to the iPad (for the AI family), because a visual control is really helpful. The Alesis iO dock brings RTA and Smaart back to FOH and completes mixing on a tablet.

A neat idea there, thanks.
We never could get SMAART to work unless the computer was hard wired to the network, not over wifi. But we'll try an ipad running Studiosix Smaart and split the signal from the wireless receiver. Our sound guy wants a BIG tablet for live mixing so it's a Windows 21" touch tablet. He uses the Aux sends so he has the 31 band equalizer to compensate for deficiencies in the in-ears, plus there's a limiter, just in case.

Well, there is no GEQ available on Auxes 13 and 14... Anyway - the parametric equalizer should be more than enough to "color" what your sound guy wants to hear. Generally, it's not uncommon to use a mono or stereo aux solely for monitoring purposes. You don't need the Solo button. Just raise a fader (or several) and listen to the signal(s). This is also an easy way to check effect returns.

The call for a BIG tablet usually reflects the wish to be able to control as many faders as possible at once on all layers. As far as I know a BIG iPad can display up to 12 input channels, but I don't know how many faders fit on a Windows 21" touch tablet (if UC Surface is scalable). It's the nature of the beast that BIG and EXPENSIVE also means HEAVY and difficult to CARRY and HOLD, especially over a longer period of time. If you want it COMPACT and FAST, you might want to have a look at the DCA groups. Besides the fact that they also work on a SMALL and LIGHT and INEXPENSIVE tablet, DCA groups reduce the amount of faders drastically. You don't need more than 5 faders for a whole band, plus max. 4 for effect returns. "DCA Spill" allows direct approach to the input channels (including Solo and Mute) and by pressing only one button you're back to the DCA masters or the Main mix. The Mute buttons on the DCA faders are also nice, because you don't need to use the Mute Groups any more. DCA groups also have a Solo button, so what would you need more...?

;-)
