StudioLive RM32Ai and RM16Ai Mixers & UC Surface with QMix Ai

Asking somebody on the group with an RM16ai, an O-scope and a tone generator to check their machine for a similar result.

+4 input to the RM16 (I tried both via analog into Ch.1 and via Dante into Ch.17), sent to Aux. "x" (I tried Aux 1 and Aux 2) and then out to Mix Output "x" (I tried Mix 3 and Mix 4). I am getting asymmetrical clipping of the mix out at less than +9 out. Mains don't seem to clip until about +19 with the same input. Input source is clean up to +22 just inserted directly into the 'scope.

Happy to provide more info if requested.

I have a ticket in with Tech Support but it may take a while. Infocom is going on and a lot of the techs are OOTO.

Thanks for any help.

Having to guess that no one else is seeing this problem so I must assume that my RM16ai is broken :(

Sure, any electric/electronic device can be defective, but the options cards and the RM mixers are not really known for problems (except the FireWire ports on the option cards...). There is one thing you can do before assuming a defect: a factory reset with the option card pulled out.

A "zero out" (scene #1) sometimes also helps to get things adjusted again, but a factory reset really brings EVERYTHING back to the construction settings. No user settings will be left. If the RM does not work then, it does need a repair. And use only the USB stick for the reset and upgrade. Online upgrades can fail easily.

If one or two factory resets do not help, the RM or the Dante card need to be checked by a specialist.

You know? I hadn't thought about a reset. I'll try that and report back.

I just finished resetting to the latest update and the latest UC.

Problem remains with the mix out clipping asymmetrically at less than +9dB output and now the mixer won't show input is 48k. Only in 44.1.

So it looks like it will need to go back to the shop.

I know I sound like a broken record but I feel like I spend considerably more time trying to make these things work that actually mixing on them. And I am being restrained here. I am bummed and pissed and frustrated and I don't have these problems with any other equipment vendor. Why is that? I am a working pro and I just don't have time for this stuff.

Anyway, I'll update my ticket.

When you factory reset, it resets the mixer back to the default sample rate of 48k.

If it doesn't match the sample rate you've set the Dante Card to in Dante Controller, then there is a clock mis-match and the mixer will not pass audio, because it has to sync its clock to the Dante hardware, and it can't if they don't match.

Presumably you had the mixer and card both set to 44.1k before the reset, so when you reset and the mixer went back to 48k, it wasn't passing audio because the card was still at 44.1k. It's also why when you change the mixer to 44.1k, you get audio.

Think of the Dante hardware on the option card as being a separate and independent device from the mixer in some sense, and the mixer just exchanges audio with it. The Dante hardware has to be configured in Dante Controller, and the mixer has to be configured in UC Surface.

Yes. Thanks for the reminder. I went to bed and remembered this as I was falling asleep :)
