I'm wanting to pick up one of these when they start hitting the shelves. I'm a little confused on the recording aspect - will I be able to just run capture on the same Win8.1 laptop as the UC runs on to start recording right away, or do I need a FireWire 800 port on my laptop in order to record?

Hey John
You will only be able to record via Firewire 800 (audio in/out only) upon release and the control of the RM mixers with the UC Surface is through ethernet or wifi only They have ofcourse talked about both Dante and AVB option cards to be released in the future, so untill then that Firewire 800 the only way to record (Or thunderbolt with and adapter) Hope this helps Ch33rs Saga

Regarding the FireWire 800, would it be a direct output to an external hard drive, or output to a computer running capture?
I guess the bottom line is I'd like to mix and record on-location using 1 laptop. My current setup doesn't have FW800, but if it did would I be able to do that?

You need two connections for control and recording - FireWire for recording and WiFi/Ethernet for control. I would assume you can do this on a single computer if it has FireWire. You also have the option to use two separate computers.

Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate the help. Last one; would I be able to use the iPad version version of capture to record, assuming the iPad had a lightning interface?

Quick follow-up to this. I was getting a funky double mixer in UC Surface when I plugged up both my firewire and ethernet connection. So with some digging and trial I figured out that with one of the new updates you are now able to both control AND record channels in Studio One (I'm assuming other DAWs as well) with a single firewire connection.
What was happening is that I would see the main console through the firewire and a second one through the ethernet/wifi connection. Then when I looked in set-up I could see the laptop. On the laptop which was just wifi, all I could see was the laptop. |
Yes. Firewire control will be staying. But just to clarify to others, you can not control the RM mixers directly in S1, or any other DAW. You need to be running UC Surface for control, but you only need one firewire connection.

HI. I have some good news. I'm working with ThinkPad W530 which is equipped with 400 Fire Wire, and my RM16AI is connected via this port. I can fully perform 16 track recording on S1, and RM is fully controlled with UC. IEEE1394B port is absolutely unnecessary. No drops, crashes, glitches working with ordinary 400 FireWire.

Glad you are able to make it work with 1394-400, but you are missing out on the performance available with a 1394-800.
Kind Regards, Skip

Yes, Skip Jones IEEEa means less performance, but not so less to be stressed, and buying IEEEb immediately You can easily run your RM16, test it, discover it, normally use and meanwhile earn some money for addictional ExpresCard Good luck

Yes, of course. You need a computer with Firewire, which seems to be getting difficult. Check the Knowledge Base article for more information.
