Panning Aux Mixes on the RM32Ai for In-Ear Monitors (Shure PSM200)

I'm trying to figure out how to get a true Stereo sound in my In-Ears. I'm using a Shure PSM 200 with Westone UM40 earbuds. When I link a mix (Mix 1 w/ Mix 2) it doesn't seem to give me a true stereo sound. My main input channels are panned (e.g. Ch.3 Elec Gtr panned 25 to the right) and it sounds correct when played out of the main left/right outputs to PA speakers but it stays in the middle of the mix in my in-ears (I tried panning a mic channel from full L to R but it doesn't sweep L to R in my ears...it's always down the middle). It sounds terrible and starts to clip as you add more instruments to the mix.

For practices, I use a HP60 with a DBX snake out the back of the RM32 into each Channel (via the Stereo Ext. In 1/4" input...and a mono-to-stereo adapter on that). I route the main L/R outputs to Input A (L & R). This method seems to work awesome and gives me the full stereo sound I'm looking for (Gts and vocals panned). If I need something, I dial it into my Aux mix and use the Mix A-B knob to adjust between my mix and the main L/R mix. I say all of this only to describe that this setup works....the PSM200 with an Aux mix in Ch. 1 and an Aux Mix in Ch.2 linked together does not.

I'm self taught and consider myself a newbie on Sound so any responses at the "Sound for Dummies" level is much appreciated!

Is the PSM 200 a stereo monitor, or just split mono?

As for the distortion, some headphone amps accept much less in the way of line input level input than most monitors. Keep turning your aux output level feed from the board down and down until the signal cleans up. You may be surprised how far down you have to go. Sometimes as far as -30 or more.

Hang in there.

While on the aux mix screen set the pan selection to hard left for aux 1 and hard right for aux 2. It could also be a pre or post setting when I get to my rm I can look to see how mine is set . I do have stereo headphone monitoring with aux mixes .so I know it does work

The distortion issue may be an impedance mismatch issue between your IEMs and the HP60. There does not appear to be a Westone UM40 model (their web site shows UM 10, 20, 30, and 50), but there is a W40. The W40 is rated at 31 ohm imdedance. The HP60 spec shows an impedance range of 32-600 ohm, so the W40s would be just outside the extreme low end of the HP60's rated impedance compatibility. You may be exceeding the amps current limit - a similar analogy is running a 2-ohm load on your power amp that is rated 2-16 ohms. You can do it, but often the sound quality (THD) suffers greatly.

Thank all of you for your help and comments! Honestly, it took a lot just get the nerve up to ask the question so I really appreciate you guys!

bennetkl - You are correct about it being the the W40 model, I was going off of memory (never a good idea for me). Your feedback on impedence really turned on a light bulb and makes sense as to why my cheaper headphones sound better than my $400 in-ears when connected directly to the HP60. I'm reading the link you posted upon completion of this post...Thank you!!

bjmccatskil - Thanks for your question, it lead me down a rabbit hole and I found out that the PSM200 is a mono unit only so that is exactly my problem. I just ordered the Sennheiser EW 300 in search of that clean stereo field to solve my problems.

Sean - Can you post a screenshot of where the pan controls are for the Aux mixes? Mine isn't showing up. Thanks!!

here is a screen shot the pan is set for each channel on the aux mix . in order to have pan functionality on AUX mixes they MUST BE LINKED . when you link them the pan slider appears above the fader and clipping indicator . notice aux 1 and 2 are linked and labeled drum monitor. and the second pic with aux 5 selected a mono not linked aux with no pan slider . I hope this helps .

And don't be shy about posting questions here . This a great bunch of people eager to help. I was lost until I found them.

I just picked up a couple HP2's, and I like them alot. I do mostly studio work. They are wired amps, and can run in either mono or stereo. To run in stereo, you would use 2 auxes, and run the wires to the left/right cables on the HP2. To run in mono, you use 1 aux, and run the wire to the left input, and turn on the mono button. That will give you one mono channel in both ears.

If you have more questions, it may be a good idea to start your own thread in the monitoring section so people will know from the title what you need help with.

Quick question, when you link the auxes to get the stereo pan knobs for the aux in UCS, does that pan affect the main stereo mix too? Or are the pans seperate for each aux and mains? If they are separate that would be awesome! But I never thought they were. . . I am doing a radio show in a couple weeks and I want to do a separate post fade mix for recording but I want the mains to stay mono and the aux mix to be in stereo, possible?

I ask here because this thread touched on it and seems relevant enough to me, thanks!

Pans are totally separate for each aux and mains. If you are using linked input channels, you have to manually expand/open panorama in each aux. Unlinked channels are not set back to center automatically.

Remember to always switch left and right for In-Ear monitoring. Plug "left" into "right input" and "right" to "left input" ... ;-)

WOW, that's totally awesome! I honestly did not think it worked that way for years now. Now when someone wants to hook in with in ears (happens more and more for me everyday) I can offer them stereo and not have to worry about them messing up my main mix pans (I give them an iPad set to their aux and usually say "don't touch anything but the faders). I assumed that the pans were the same just like the rest of the FAT channel processing per channel, but apparently not, this is great news!

Thank you!

Going to work well for the Rolling Hills Radio Show on the fly stereo recording mix, till now I've been sending a split to a seprate mixer for someone else to mix a radio mix while I do the live mix, with $0 budget there is no one to do post production so we need to record a live radio mix and make a real live mix for the studio audience of 150 which don't always correlate to being the same. But this year he is busy filming for tv so I told them I could do the live mix and recording mix at the same time (Not too difficult because most acts are just solo acoustic stuff, but sometimes you get a amp or two or 5 piece band haha, often without notice). After saying that I realized that I may have a problem because I need the main mix in mono for acoustic reasons in this venue. I plan to create a post fader stereo aux mix, then using nice headphones I'll check the recording mix at soundcheck and from time to time during the show to try to balance things out a little in the headphones but it will still follow my fader moves from the main mix. Typically I'd just have to bring the vocal channels down a little from the rest because I always have the vocals far above the rest in the live mix. Something like that, we'll see how it goes, but at least I can add a little bit of stereo pan to things when needed, thats sweet!

Does anyone knows is there a way to hard pan stere linked input?

Seems like the only option we have - is to adjust stere image, but not actually pan this

No, linked channels remain stereo, but panning can be reduced to center for both signals. The only option you have is to UNLINK your input channels and pan them both left to half left.

May I ask why you use linked inputs/a stereo channel when you want to hear two mono signals? This is also a artistic question because if a keyboarder designs his sounds and his playing in stereo, how can anybody want to hear him mono in the left ear...?

I have Universal Control 3.1 running on an Android tablet, as well as a CS18Ai. That's how I discovered a BIG gap in Aux Mix panning control on the CS18.

Connect both the CS18 and UC to an RM mixer, and select the Mix Masters mode on both controllers. If you use both Aux and Sub stereo mixes as I do, you'll see a blue V-shaped indicator under the MUTE button in each linked-stereo mix bus on the UC Mix Masters display. You can manipulate the stereo spread of each pair of linked buses by touching these indicators.

On the CS18 Mix Masters mode, however, only the Sub Mixes display V-shaped stereo spread indicators, which can be adjusted with the Pan knob. The stereo-linked Aux Mixes have L and R indicators, but no V-shaped stereo spread indicators, and when selected, they do not respond to the Pan knob.

Presonus recently released updated CS18 firmware, which is currently undergoing Beta testing. Hopefully they can find time to fix this missing CS18 feature as well.
