i have been through that as well, when i select configure speakers it only shows up to 16. also referring to the manual it is more about selecting a different digital out put rather then configuring speakers.

So... are you on Mac or PC? And on which version of UC and mixer firmware? And is it a firewire connection you are using, or a network connection?

Always helps to provide as much information about your setup as you can :)

I just checked how the FireWire routing works on my SL 2442AI and Mac mini. UC Surface is not in use. In Audio-MIDI-Setup FireWire indicates 40 input and 26 outputs (could be less on a SL 1642AI). Following the instructions from the Knowledge Base documents (especially the first document) it is very easy to change inputs and outputs. But I do not use FireWire for anything else than Capture and UC Surface and sometimes Studio One, so I'm no specialist in this kind of things. I suppose you want to play audio from your computer to your mixer. I used iTunes to play a stereo track and sent the l/r signals to channels 25 and 26, which are the digital inputs of my mixer. Probably this is exactly what you are looking for. I have no idea why it does not work for you.

There are two questions coming to my mind: Does system menue page 8 on your mixer say "Driver On"? And are you using a 800/800 cable with NO ADAPTORS ANYWHERE?

"Driver on" means that mixer and computer are connected through FireWire, so the problem seems to be on the computer side. You haven't told which OS you are using and which versions of firmware and software (UC Control/UC Surface). It is a known problem that just updating everything does not always work. There were too many major changes, so this article might give you an idea: http://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/articles/210048113-How-do-I-Uninstall-Reinstall-my-device-drivers-for-the-StudioLive-AI-on-a-Mac-.

Even if this probably not part of the problem: also on the mixer's side there have also been major changes in firmware and software, which do not always install just by a firmware upgrade. All depends on where you started and how you proceeded. If you would want to upgrade from UC 1.4 to UC 1.8, this may work, but it's not guaranteed. The download page shows which versions match. You don't need the latest and greatest, but what you use has to be matching: http://www.presonus.com/support/downloads/StudioLive-1642AI. At the moment a factory reset (with the option card pulled out) is the best firmware upgrade. Remember to save scenes and presets on a computer before doing the factory reset.

Universal Control 1.8 (Mac/PC) v1.8.3.40882
UC Surface v1.8.1.39355

There is a new UC Surface coming in the next days.
