Some bandmates and I are going to be getting together from 3 corners of the US to work on some new songs. I use Studio One Pro 3. I got them both to download and install S1 Prime.
My idea is to use Google Drive to store the session and to keep it sync'd on all our computers. For anyone unfamiliar with Google Drive, when using the desktop app it keeps a copy locally on your hard drive, and keeps a copy in the cloud. A shared folder will sync with anyone sharing that folder. No single one of us would work on our parts at the same time. Has anyone done this sort of thing? Also, I'm assuming those guys on Prime and me on Pro, we can share the session. I plan on using only stock Prime available plugins or to bounce down tracks that I use any other plugins on. Would this work? Anyone have a better suggestion for the syncing or sharing of the session? Thanks! |
You could try Gobbler. I'm just trying to set this up with my other songwriters. check gobbler.com it's meant to be specifically for working on projects from places. Don't know how it works when you're working at the same time. It seems to make versions so I don't know if that will create problems down the line knowing which is the "master" version.
What it says it does is to only upload the changed files, once you've uploaded the song. This should make further upload times shorter. good luck. Luke |
I just use dropbox, works a treat
I have a webcam setup so we just add stuff in then reload to dropbox in real time. Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLZ3in9YG40 |
I've never had a problem with the old fashioned way of sending a song or a part to someone as mp3/wma back and forth until you send the final .wav file for the track compressed with monkey audio.
The google drive does sound interesting, like it would be more of a shared creativity. So everyone has to have a storage account or would just one person have the account and you could have multiple users? Curious how it would work.

The deal with Google Drive is anyone with a Gmail address already has free drive storage.
You can share a certain folder with other Gmail users. When using the desktop app on your computer, you have a local copy on your hard drive. As you make changes to files within that folder they update to the cloud. Anyone sharing that folder, their hard drives with then be updated with whateber changes were made or with additional files that were created In theory it should work perfectly. In practice, it may not be seamless. Glitches are inevitable. |

Still, it's pretty gratifying but a lot of down time. But one could always come back on their own time and fill in the pieces. Would save all of the waiting, then.

Another issue besides choosing a method of file saving and transport is who will be in charge of project management -- sounds like you -- and whether or not your co-conspirators can resist going rogue by adding parts or fooling around with the arrangement. Cause once they do that, then you'll be stuck performing all this forensic recovery work to figure out what's what as you try and reconcile at least 2 different versions of what you hoped would be the latest master file.
In my case I'm supposed to be in charge of project management; however, one guy keeps going rogue (playing around with the engineering and the production instead of just doing one agreed-upon task like adding a track or tuning the vocals) no matter how many times I ask him to lay off. The last time that happened, it took me two days to sort everything out. So you might want to be aware of that side of things, too ... And you might want everyone involved to save with their initials in the file name to avoid confusion. p.s. I use wetransfer, never one problem. I think you'll find these days that the technical part is actually the easy part! |
