Hey All,
A new music video, I released. This was a fun project, as it started out with learning Stepic (from Devicemeister). A brilliant sequencer that offers some very powerful automation, modulation, and arpegiator possibilities. "Our Time" evolved as quite a cyclic piece with subtle (though powerful) automation curves that for the most part, only involved four main synth tracks! I then added sax, and some acoustic guitar I had sampled into Sample One XT. Total instrument tracks involved here are only twelve. So hopefully it serves as a motivating start for some, that might feel it takes more tracks to come up with such a synthesis focused score , or ambient type piece of music. The closing credits outline the instruments that were used. Feel free to comment, and most importantly,.... enjoy the ride! James https://youtu.be/BqOZ4-0iY1w?si=_oERCylrPWg-2G1b

Hi James,
It's a nice idea to show the beginning and the end of the video with the record player, even though at the end, the needle is not really at the start of the record but at the inner edge, which doesn't detract from the concept. The initial uplifting seconds until the drums kick in are very well done, and I also like the use of the acoustic guitar. The sonic backdrop skillfully intertwines with the video sequences, creating a smooth flow. Some elements evoke memories of Brian Eno and the band Air for me, in a pleasant way. Cheers, Oliver

Thanks so much for viewing, and your impressions Oliver. 🙏
A friend of mine had a really spiritual poetic response, which I don't know if I'm at liberty to share here, about the piece. Truly thought provoking. All the best. James

Hi James
Like it very much, the track is very ambient. Interesting to see Stepic used in this way, differently to the long rhythmic chugging 'beat' sequences that I feel it would normally be used for. Not sure that made any sense, though

excellent work jim... very pleasant. time alignment damn near perfect on the vid parts and loved the subject matter. as for the audio... nice bottom, clean separation between parts, highs crispy but not shrill and all set in the same space. quite soothing imo
from past works seems a bit out of your comfort zone and you took to it like a duck to water. i am really impressed. thanks for letting me know you posted. i would have missed it if you hadn't cheers p.s. hello leo and oliver... hope all is well |
leosutherland wroteHi James Makes total sense. Musically, I start out trying to keep the piece within some sort of ambient confines, but the progressive side takes over and I just end up structuring things differently. I hope that answers your very good point. Stepic is largely that ambient tool, but it's also hugely powerful on the automation side with almost any synth sound, to add life where it wasn't before. Such as randomizing at a certain min/max of an oscillator opening. So modulation is right where it's mist effective ("oooh", "whah" and resonant sounds). Stepic actually takes one places their synth control itself can't go. I really like it! It's very present in the opening of the track, and throughout "Our Time". Note placement wise, I wouldn't always use Stepic, as I like to sequence right from mousing in notes in the DAW as you do. However, for automation of MIDI parameters, Stepic is a beast. Thanks so much for taking the time to listen, and subscibe. 🙏 More stuff on the way.

And you know, I've made several attempts to do some ambient work. I mean I really like ambient. What tends to happen is my progressive side always steps in and has to give it a verse/chorus/ABACAB...etc, sections. Original concept shot to hell. You know, me screw it up! So great point. Real brief on the mix and EQ side, I'm now using BX Console Amek 9099. Jay, it's golden. Best channel strip out of Plugin Alliance. It's just how I want to see a console's channel. I got it for $29 which comes in from time to time. Thanks for the listen, brother. 🙏 I knew you'd enjoy the subject matter. Jim

jBranam wrotewith my dyslexia every time i see the name Stepic... my mind says Septic lol Hah! When I hear Stepic, I think of a doctor placing it somewhere, then saying, "OK, now...... cough". Yikes! Is it me, or when the record starts playing and I see the eagle, I'm waiting for someone to pass the bong. It must be a flashback.

I'm not a fan of synthesizer music. But here everything is in its place. It sounds good. If the acoustic guitar part was recorded on a real guitar, I would be delighted.
But it’s probably difficult to write something “your own, unique” in this style. Too many similar compositions. cheers

Hey, thanks for listening. I don't agree at all on similar compositions sounding the same. That's usually the standpoint of one being very distant to the nature of something. That's fine, we all have an opinion. As to the guitar being recorded, it was recorded. My Martin HD28-V was sent to Sample One. As I initially stated, this started as an experimental ambient piece using Stepic. The song was built around that premise. Unique possibilities. All of my other songs were not created this way, and all have real acoustic or electric guitar played in real time. Cheers [/quote]
