Hi,

My first post here. I've been using Studio One for about four years now - a convert from Logic.

I've just finished this track. It features many 3rd party plugins (Addictive Drums, Orange Tree Samples Dracus and Passion Flute, Acoustic Samples B5, Scarbee J Bass, Zero-G Ethera, to name a few).

Let me know what you think.

Paul

Remarkable work. Extremely complex but enjoyable.

Loved the heavy-duty organ stuff. Rocking jazz. Really great playing.

Liked the vocal chorus sounds. And the horns all over.

Great, great drums throughout the piece.

How long did it take to put this together?

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked it.

It took about six weeks to do, off and on around my day job and gigging.

Wonderful job on this production!
I personally love the flavor and style. Great playing all around.
It is long and I skipped at bit on the second half and will go back to it when I have more time.
Everything sounds good. I think the bass could come up a bit compared to the kick. I listened on my ATH M50's.

Thanks - glad you like it.

Bringing up the bass is a comment i often get with my mixes... I'm a bit paranoid about making the mix muddy, so i probably play it too safe. Maybe i should roll off some bottom end on my monitors. Do you think it needs to come up a lot?

I said the bass could come up a bit which is not a lot! Try your high pass around 30hz and use +2db @ 70hz and +1 @ 1k for starters. Parallel compression techniques might help some too.
As I mention many times here, listed to your mix really soft and see if you can hear all the instruments. Bass is the hardest to nail down. You might just need a little more volume on it!
Compare to other commercial recordings on your system to learn better what your speakers and headphones are telling you.

Really nice! The bass sounded fine to me, the high register lick cuts through, and the buff'd distorted guitar covers up the low end in those sections. I might be tempted to bump it up a db or so during the "angelic bridge" section - I love the bass harmonics part there!

My first impression was that the drums seemed to fight with the mix a bit. Maybe a tighter snare? On my headphones I got a marching snare impression, maybe experiment with some of the smaller/tighter AD snares? Id be tempted to experinent with some drum verb as well - the wet leads might stand out more if the drums aren't so dry. All just guesses - this is pretty awesome as-is!

Also have to ask - are you playing, or are these loops?

The drums are midi loops from various sources with a few manual tweaks here and there, playing Addictive Drums 2.

Everything else is me playing.

Definite film score feel to this (for me at least). Really nice 'quality' to the sound!

I'm going to do my usual thing and agree with Bbd .. maybe a slight upward tweak on the bass. (And no .. Bbd doesn't pay me to agree with him if anyone is starting to suspect that! )

Thanks for sharing.
