Hi everyone,
I had the pleasure of writing a short more electronic demo song for Best Service's / Sonuscore's new orchestra library The Orchestra. Of course I did that in Studio One although I'm still frequently hearing things like "you can't do filmscores or orchestral stuff in S1". So here's my arrangement. I tried to bring in some unusual and maybe cumbersome harmonic and melodic lines... Everything except synths (Omnisphere), drums (DM-307) and atmos is from "The Orchestra". I'm looking forward to every feedback! Cheers, Lukas

Hi jazzundso,
Sounds very good. I'm thinking about buying 'The Orchestra' library. Q. Did you use any of the Arps of The Orchestra Engine in this track ? or just the individual articulations of The Orchestra ? Did you purchase it because of the Layering Feature via their Engine ? or .... ? How do you like 'The Orchestra' so far ? any dislikes ? Thanks, Muziksculp |
Hi muziksculp,
thanks What you hear at 1:54 - 2:05 is an arp of The Orchestra, but only sustained for a short time because I wanted to have only a short part of the original pattern. Apart from that in this case I didn't use the patterns, arps and ostinatos included in the library because I wanted to write my own ostinatos and patterns. I did another track (hasn't been finished yet) where I made much use of the arpeggiator and the orchestra colors (that's the name for combined ensemble patches, e.g. "Strings + Flute Sustain" or "Low Strings + Low Brass Staccato"). For me the colors and the layering engine are really useful because you're not fixed to one "mixing" but you decide which instruments within an ensemble (violin, viola, cello, clarinet, oboe, flute etc.) you want to dominate. I think the greatest thing about the library is the flexibility and the possibility to get fast results. Action Strings has many nice phrases and patterns but you can't edit them. Symphobia has many great ensemble patches but you can't divide them into single groups or instruments. The Orchestra includes all the ensemble things but also brings single instruments if you need them. Disadvantage so far: The single instrument patches are not as great as you get in other specialized libraries (CineSamples, Orchestral Tools, VSL, Cinematic Studio Strings etc.). I like the flutes and the strings, but I don't like the clarinets. So of course it won't replace Berlin Woodwinds...

Hi jazzundso,
Thank You Very Much for the helpful feedback. I have many Orchestral Libraries, i.e. Spitfire, Orchestral Tools, 8dio, ProjectSam, ...etc. but non of them has the functionality that 'The Orchestra' offers, I'm also not too fond of the overall quality of the instruments of 'The Orchestra', but I think in a dense mix they won't be too much of a problem, plus I can always mix in some of the better quality instruments/sections from other libraries. I'm going to wait until I view more demos, reviews, ..etc. , no rush. Cheers, Muziksculp |
Oh.. by the way, have you tried to use the Multi Instruments feature in Studio One Pro 3 to create custom layers of single instruments/sections ?
I have not yet, but plan to experiment a bit with this feature, and save my own Multi Inst. presets of customized layered instruments. I will post back with some feedback once I spend some time experimenting with this. Cheers, Muziksculp |
Sounds very complex and nice.
I must spend too much time in front of Studio One, because I kept wanting to zoom in on the screen to view track details.

Yes, I used the multi instruments quite often but more for jazz/fusion tracks where I wanted to layer different synth sounds (Omnisphere, Wavestation, Spire etc.). I think for orchestra purposes at least for me it's easier to have all the single instruments appear directly in the mixer so I can adjust panning/reverb/EQ for the overall mix.

I enjoyed that piece. Nice layers and textures. It did keep my attention throughout which is something a lot composers miss. It's one thing to create a piece for yourself that you love and don't really care what others thing of it but then its great to create something to share with others hoping they will like it too.
You did the later. Mix sounded good. Someday, boost up the very low end a bit (30-40hz) to let the bass drum or really low end basses to push through some air on your speakers. That is what you might have done with this mix if you were on the mixing stage for a film. Give those sub woofers some information! |
What a nice feedback - thanks so much!
You're right with the low end (30-40hz). For this time it's too late, but I will focus on that next time I do a cinematic piece...
