Hi, brand new to Presonus and NOT very computer savvy. I have UC Surface installed in my brand new MacBook Pro, connected to a Netgear Nighthawk X4S router (via thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter), and my Presonus RML16AI connected to the router as well, all via cat5e Ethernet cables. I've turned the rml16 (and the router), wait for the red light on the rml16, then open universal control on my MacBook, then I get a little exclamation point in the corner of the UC screen and a message that says "limited or no connectivity to studiolive......"
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Could be a few things causing tha. Is this a closed network for the audio gear only?

Consumer grade routers can take a while to fully boot, so you always want to power that on first. Wait for it to fully initialize, then power on the mixer and pc. Reason for this, the router serves the role (or should) of dealing out the ip addresses to all things on the network (DCHP). If it is not on first, other devices may not have an ip address, and thus limited connectivity.

Try the above first, and hopefully that gets you going. If not, we can dig a little deeper.

You don't need a router to get RML and UC Surface going. Simply use the FireWire connection. UC Control should show the FireWire symbol. Click on it. UC Surface should open. If you are asked for a code, it's 12345. You need the permissions "FOH" and "Ch.rename".

Thank you both for the replies. I do have the firewire-thunderbolt adapter ordered, but it's not in my hands yet.
I have tried running Ethernet directly from the RML to the MacBook and it just sits loading, never making connection.
I will try the first suggestion with the router for now.
I have an iPad with UC as well, so I will have to keep the router. Just trying to get a wired signal before I move on to that.
thanks again for the responses.

And yes, this will be for the gear only.
Please tell me I don't have to be connected to internet for UC to operate!

I believe I had the Presonus powered up long before I connected the router though, so hopefully that's my problem.

You SHOULD not be connected to internet - the router creates its own network, that RM, computer and iPads use. It has nothing to do with internet or any other network. It is and should be a "world of its own".

As Matt said that router has to fully boot BEFORE you switch on other devices. And don't use the dongle with your RM. You don't need it if there is a wired connection like FireWire.

This is possible, but with your self admitted inexperience in networking I would avoid it. Connectivity all comes down to ip addresses being in the same range and subnet. We can help get you sorted out.

Still the same message.
I was able to find the network on my iPad and joined it. But when I go into "networking" in the settings, it to says limited or no wifi.

I even disconnected the Ethernet from the MacBook, joined the router's network in the wifi settings of the MacBook, and still the same message. It is recognizing my RML16. Just not connecting to it.

You don 't need to touch anything in "networking", but you get some information about what is connected and how. If your iPad is connected to the network, just start UC Surface. That should be all...

I am connected to the "netgear72" wifi signal, which is what the router says.
The iPad will open the UC mixer, but there is no signal. I have audio playing thru the RML. I have the yellow light on channel 1 indicating a signal and I can hear it via the headphone jack. However, the power light is still red, indicating that it's not connected to a control device. And I am getting no kind of signal in the UC mixer on the iPad.
UC will still not even open the mixer on the MacBook.

Wow, I've started getting that message too in just the last couple of days concerning my faderport 8. It's been totally fine all of this time but all of a sudden that little pop up shows up during my sessions. I thought it was my system but after reading your post I'm thinking it's a glitch.

Not really. Even though they are using UC Surface 2, FaderPort 8 and RM mixers are totally different products. We are not talking about a USB connection here.

The problem is the approach regarding network. It would be nice if you could just plug everything. It simply doesn't work this way and it's not obvious that you are in a trap. Here are the two standard videos dealing with the theme. They show the complexity of networking and give an idea, what has gone wrong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PwM9PI3t5o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3DC25Y6Gg0

Unfortunately PreSonus has released no video showing the "standard" approach by using dynamic IP addresses. It's always talked about, but never fully explained. The key is the router. It needs to be set up for the duty to deliver the IP addresses and serve as WAP (Wireless Access Point). This document explains this more, but deals with Apple routers: https://forums.presonus.com/viewtopic.php?f=202&t=4847.

I am no specialist for networks, so my help is limited. There are specialists writing here in the forums, but it's Easter time and holidays... As you write the network is not working at all. No blue light on the RM is not good at all. We need to get the blue light shining! The FireWire connection (RM to MacBook) will get you going. Then we look further.

So this is a brand new RM16? The IP will be set to "self assigned" by default.

You need to either match the IP of your computer and router to it or change it to match your router.

When your FireWire adapter arrives, connect it and you'll be able to access the RM. Go to the settings page/network tab and select DHCP.
Reboot the RM and it will work as expected.

Yes, everything I'm using is brand new.
Sounds like I'm pretty well stuck until that FireWire adapter comes in.
Thanks everyone. I will update as I make progress.

I will say, it's slightly aggravating that the Presonus page and instructions make it sound like you can just plug everything in and go. I feel like maybe I should have studied at ITT for 4 - 6 years before I bought this stuff. :reading:

No need to wait. There are button combos that can be pressed on startup to enter certain functions. To enter the mixer to Dynamic IP mode, hold the "Cue" button, then power on the mixer. Hold the cue button until all channel led's are lit. See the link below for complete details. Scroll down a bit for IP mode.

You could also change your computer IP to match the IP of the RM, but you said you're not computer savy so I ignored that option...

I will try this button option as soon as I get a chance.

As far as changing the computer's IP, I'm not sure if I will be able to, as it is a state owned computer. It is very picky about what it let's me do. I have to put in a ticket to have the I.T. guy do it, and blah blah blah. Big hassle.

I work for a state facility and am sort of an "unofficial" music therapist.
