Hi there,

Getting ready to use the iPad for setting up the desk in a live situation and was wondering what would be the best router for connecting my late 2013 MacBook Air & iPad 2 to a wireless network?

I would feel happier using an Apple router for no other reason than both of my devices are also Apple and I will probably be connecting an iPhone in the future as well so they should all coexist happily...right?

I see references to the latest Airport Express Gen 6 being a good choice for the latest AI consoles but what about the earlier non-AI 16.0.2

I wonder if the latest Airport Express is reliable as I like the smaller form factor.

I also have a couple of the earlier Airport Express units kicking around somewhere...the ones that plug directly into the mains power outlet and I wonder if one of those might do the trick instead?

I would prefer the later, puck or Apple TV shape as I could position it up higher more easily to give better range and it is much neater looking.

The type of venues we play are not huge so not looking for the nth degree of range but more interested in a solid, reliable wireless router that is neat & tidy, plays well with Apple devices and does not drop the connection.

My MacBook Air is the current (late 2013) model so should be able to connect to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band for less cluttered communication but will my now ageing iPad 2 also be able to connect to 5GHz and is this the best choice vs 2.4GHz?

Thanks & kind regards,

FWIW, I just picked up the new Airport Express, and it is working brilliantly -- my first generation unit was not. I'm very pleased with the new model.

Thanks for the quick reply talmen...that sounds promising!

Some questions if I may;

Was it easy to setup?

Does it bitch about not having an Internet connection?

Can you hide the SSID to prevent it being visible to the average punter?

What sort of range does it have?

End of questions...

Thanks & kind regards,

The new AI mixers connect directly to a router via an included WiFi dongle, and it was this connection that was not liking some routers. The classic mixers are only limited by the computer/iPad connectivity to the router, and they're much easier to get to work and play well together...

Ah that's good news then!

I'll probably spring for the latest Airport Express although I just might give the older AE a try first.

Figure it all being Apple it should all co-exist peacefully? Yeah right...:)

And theoretically using 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz should also help by being less congested although I understand the range of 5GHz might not be as good as 2.4GHz?

Compromises...always compromises :)

Would I be right in thinking my iPad 2 should connect to 5GHz?

Thanks & kind regards,

Does it bitch about not having an Internet connection? When you do the setup it looks for internet, but you can ignore that and it is still happy.

Can you hide the SSID to prevent it being visible to the average punter? Yes.

What sort of range does it have? Haven't tested range, but I've heard no one complain about the range, and I've had no dropouts when operating in the field.

End of questions...

Thanks again talman,

Only today I reserved the current Airport Express at PCWorld but then decided to give one of my Gen 1 devices a shot before I went down to collect.

After doing a factory reset as I was unable to connect using Airport Utility I managed to get in and configure it.

Setup on 2.4GHz first, limited the DHCP range to just my 3 devices and reserved the IP address to MAC address on my iPhone, iPad & MacBook Air before setting it to 5GHz only and hiding the SSID to give a little added peace of mind.

Happy to say in my limited testing all 3 devices seem to stay connected to the Airport Express using 5GHz so I have answered my own question on whether my iPad 2 has 5GHz capability!

Next job will be to connect the MBA to the 16.0.2 and check operation & range.

Oh and cancel my Collect-In-Store Gen 2 Airport Express! :)

Thanks & kind regards,

Glad you got your Gen1 to work OK. I was unable to use mine with my A&H Qu-16 mixer. (It worked fine with the PreSonus stuff, though -- go figure! Always nice when you don't have to get out the wallet to solve a problem, though!

Hi, I hope someone still reads this.... I have a 16.0.2 and an ipad 2- now I just got a Dell Precision 4600 laptop, and as I would like to test the already-installed SL Remote on the ipad, I would like to ask a probably stupid question or two:

the Apple router works with a Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop, right?

glynhughes, everything works fine in the meantime for you, no issues? I want to only run at 5 gHz, 2.4 is totally overrun in this neighborhood :-/, the ipad 2 running 5 is critical.

Thanks upfront, Kenny
