I just purchased a used pristine 16.4.2 AI. If I want to use Capture on my StudioLive 16.4.2 AI do I need to do a direct hookup to the firewire or can I use the network?

As far as I remember it is firewire only. They never made the network option work with capture.

If you need some help, here are some links for you:

At the moment you see a warning on the download page to not download Universal Control 2.9.1. This warning should actually be given to all (!) 2.x versions of Universal Control because of the FireWire Display Lag. The metering shows "something", but not what you want and need to see. If Smaart is important for your work, you better stay with Universal Control 1.8 (July 28, 2016) and the appropriate versions of firmware and Capture. You find all firmware versions in your PreSonus account. Curiously enough Capture and Studio One are not affected by the display lag, only the AI mixers and Smaart.

While it is possible to use Studio One via network, Capture needs a direct FireWire connection. Your mixer should have come with the right cable ("bi-lingual" FireWire 800), because the FireWire cable is part of the original package.

Due to its compact size, the SL 1642AI does not "show" all functions (have a look at the parametric equalizer), therefore an iPad is a good supplement to your mixer. The greatest feature of UC Surface is its ability to display the complete Fat Channel on one screen. Unfortunately this feature was added in one of the later 2.x versions and just recently "Sync Select" (UC Surface follows the Select button on your mixer), so you will have to decide if you want the new surface features or correct metering/Smaart display...
