Hi,
Notion 5 won't open Musescore Musicmxl files, even though Notion has an import option for them and the MusicXML website says it is supported. I get the message 'The file C:\Users\xxxx\xxxx\What_a_wonderful_world.mxl could not be opened. The data in this file could not be recognized. Other than an export/import fudge with other software, any clues anybody? Thanks Gary |
The *.mxl is a compressed XML format which is not readable by Notion. You have to export it as *.xml.
From MuseScore: MusicXML (*.xml) MusicXML is the universal standard for sheet music and can be used by most of the currently available scorewriters including Sibelius, Finale, and more than 100 others. It is the recommended format for sharing your sheet music between different scorewriters. |
I had a lot of trouble too and exporting from MuseScore as mxl didn't work. I have the iPad app which is simply amazing and worked out the following steps using both the PC and the iPad. It works, it is not elegant!
Notion and Musescore. 1 Find and download the Musicxml file in MuseScore. Can download to desktop or maybe straight to Dropbox. 2 Open Notion on iPad. 3 Open Dropbox on iPad and click Open With, choose Notion. 4 Rename the file and open it 5 Then send it to Dropbox as a Notion file. 6 On PC go to Dropbox Apps Notion Mobile and open with PC Notion |
This MIGHT work...
Append ".zip" to the .mxl file's filename, so it's something like blah.mxl.zip. Now double-click on the file, or open it by whatever means you normally open .zip files. You should see a .xml file therein. Copy/unpack/uncompress the .xml file (eg, by dragging it onto a folder). Fire up Notion and try importing the .xml. |
I have 2 versions of Notion:
a) a cheap ($16) version for the iPad b) the most recent (ca.$150) for Windows. In many ways, I find (a) to be the better one. (b) does not open .xml files generated from Sibelius, making it impossible to collaborate with my friend composers who use Sibelius. Actually, I can collaborate with them only because I have (a), the cheap iPad version. It's inconvenient and upsetting to have to depend on the iPad version to open files. |
marizacabral wrote3 years later, this is still true. Notion does not open .xml files, which should be universally opened by all notation software. W O W !!! I import .mxl files all the time after downloading them from MuseScore.
