I like the XMAX mic pres in the 1818 quite a bit and I'm wondering if it can be used as a standalone 8-ch mic pre feeding its 8 analog outputs, WITHOUT running VSL software and having a computer connected. I don't see mention of this in the user manual. I don't need converters, just mic pres.

thanks

I'm pretty sure it can't be used standalone. But you can use its pres anyway if it's connected to (any) computer without it being your "active" audio interface (hope you understand what I mean by that). However, I'm not sure if that would involve both A/D and D/A conversion - although I don't think that would even worsen the signal noticably ...

Okay, thanks. I suspected that. It will be a great device again when it is compatible with Yosemite.

Hard to imagine they couldn't make it work that way through a s/w upgrade... but I wouldn't hold your breath ;-)

yeh, it would have been nice if it could have worked as 8 pres out the ADAT perhaps.

A software upgrade cannot make hardware do something it wasn't designed for. ;)

Yes that would be nice but again, that's not what this device was designed for. That is, however, exactly what the Digimax D8 was designed to do.
