So I bought my son the Audiobox USB 96 Anniversary Edition in late 2020. Up to this point, it's worked just fine. Recently, it's started to produce what at first soudned like distortion/crackling. I tried lowering the volume on the PC sound controls to no avail. But the more I listen to it, it sounds lmore like the audio is breaking down or aliasing. I

used to experience this back when I ahd a firewire interface. This happens not only in Studio One Artist, but also in normal windows audio playback, such as from YouTube or Spotify. We tried different USB ports, different cables, and the only thing that changed was sometimes the PC would detect the audiobox and other times it would not. It seems sensitive to cables and ports. We then installed it on my PC. We had the same problem and tried all the different options of cables and ports. We even tried a powered USB hub, no difference. On both PCs we tried changing the buffer between 128 and 1024, no difference. We tried different headphones, plugging them into the headphone jack as well as the main outputs. No difference. I even took the USB cable from my Studio 1810 and plugged it into the audiobox, and it wouldn't even detect it on my PC. I know the cable works because it works just fine with my 1810. After that, I uninstalled Universal Control and all the drivers, rebooted, reinstalled UC and drivers, and still no change.

I've exhausted everything I can think of, and so far, internet and forum searches have not yielded anything useful to my situation.
This was tested on both systems, both Studio One Artust and Pro, as well as Windows Audio playback with YouTube, Spotify, and local MP3 playback. All hardware is up to date on firmware, and latest drivers installed.

If anyone has any ideas they are certainly welcome.

Thanks

Well.....you've been very thorough. You've literally tried everything I might have suggested.
At this point I think it's fairly safe to say that the problem is with the Audiobox itself.
As it's out of warranty, Presonus will not repair it for free and as much as the bench charge
is it's probably not worth it. You could probably find a used working unit on fleabay for less
than the repair charge. I don't think tech support will have an answer for you other than "buy
a new unit."

I don't know if you have any electronic tech experience but before I threw in the towel I would
open the device up and look for any bad,(bulging at the top), capacitors. Blown capacitors are often the culprit in this type of situation. And, if you have decent soldering skills, it's a cheap and easy fix.

Best of Luck!

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, but thought I'd reach out on here in case there was something unknown that I hadn't tried or thought of. 20 years ago I probably could have done a good solder job but these days not so much. It's true it'd probably be easier just to buy him a new one, but I don't like giving up without exhausting all possibilities and/or resources.

I appreciate the input anyhow. I may end up just getting him one of the newers ones, or just let him do the reserach and pick one out himself. :)

Anyway, thanks again for the response.

I hear ya' brother! I'm a regular pitbull when it comes to problems. I'm doggedly, (pun intended),
persistent and have a pretty good track record of making square pegs fit in round holes. But,
sometimes you just hit a brickwall and it's time to step away. I don't easily give up but I'm also
not a big fan of wasting my time. I have quite a few Presonus interfaces and currently they're all old
firewire units. I've got three Firestudio 26x26's daisy chained with a MOTU 8Pre for a whopping 32 channel rig. I've also got two Firestudio Mobile's. All great units but getting long in the tooth.

I found myself in need of a small USB interface for recording bands live in stereo so I just picked
up an AudioBox i2 used for cheap on eBay. It works with both my Win mini laptop and also a Samsung Droid tablet, (iPad's too I believe if you're into that sort of thing).

Great little box with a small footprint easy to toss in a backpack and go!
