I purchased an inexpensive firewire 6pin1394 to usb adapter ($2) to see if I couldn't use a legacy 2 input firebox unit with a windows 7 laptop with usb ports. Initial tests were negative. Can anyone tell me whether that will even work - using an adapter to connect a firewire output to a usb input?

As mwright137 pointed out this will not work. Your only option is to use a pc express card like this:

Of course, that will only work if your laptop has a pc express slot.
