Difference between an Audio Track, Instrument Track

Hi guys, I have Studio One 2 Professional and whilst I have done quite a bit of home recording over the last 20 plus years using Tascam Portastudios and also have used a PC extensively at work and home for 15 years plus I am a newbie when it comes to DAW.
I have done quite a bit of work on it so far playing around with it and watching tutorial videos from the likes of Groove3, you tube etc. and have recorded some tracks but I have decided to go back a bit and read the manual whilst watching the videos, the problem being I want to race ahead too quickly and I am now conscience of maybe missing stuff.

Can some please explain this.
in the manual it says ''before recording can take place you need at least one track on which to record'' (I am okay with what a track is).
It then says ''Studio One has 2 types of track; the Audio track and the instrument track. audio is recorded to Audio track, whilst musical performance data is recorded to instrument tracks''

Can someone please try and explain ''simply'' what the difference between audio and instrument track is and what ''musical performance'' data is?

is it simply ''Audio'' is say recording a guitar or vocal and ''Instrument'' is MIDI stuff such recording a drum track from my Superior Drummer software plug in.

many thanks in advance for any help

Phil

I have had an answer from elsewhere which is what I suspected

an audio track is for recording audio such as a guitar, vocal, piano
an instrument track is fro recording MIDI data

Unfortunately
If that midi data is actually being used to control external devices, there is no way to export that midi data when you do a mixdown or export.

So would the solution be to Bounce the Instrument (MIDI) Track to an Audio Track?

No clear answer in comments as of 2/11/20. I have been using the audio track for vocals and the instrument track for instruments and midi. I can not hear a difference between (audio or instrument) track. Nor can I hear a difference between input #1 or input #2 on Presonus Audiobox USB , tho they are marked Mic and Instrument inputs respectively on the hardware.

I am also a new to using a DAW and the best I've been able to figure out from everything is that audio tracks are intended for recording things with microphones. Instrument tracks are meant for recording external devices that have been set up in Studio One (which usually means MIDI controllers, so it's probably assumed that the instrument setting is a synonym for MIDI track). I'm pretty sure you can record with mics into an instrument track (it's been a few months since I tried this so I don't remember exactly...and sadly I just moved my audio interface last night so can't test right now).
