x86 vs x64?

Should I install the x86 or x64 version?
This should be taken as a guide only, please do think carefully and add your own research to the information here before making your choice.

You should seriously consider installing the x64 version of Studio One1 if...

1. You are already using an x64 OS

2. You have all the relevant x64 drivers you need for your hardware (sound card in particular) already officially available (out of beta).

3. If you have more than 4gb of ram, you will be able to access all of it if you are running an x64 OS. You probably should install the x64 version of Studio One. 4GB of RAM would be a bare minimum for an x64 OS. 6 - 8GB of RAM or more would be better still.

4. You use large sample Libraries of use plugins that use a large amount of ram Kontakt or Spectrasonics plugs e.t.c. These plugins really do benefit from having more ram available to them but of course they are still perfectly functional with less ram available to them on an x86 OS.

5. You do not want to run two versions of Studio One (x86 and x64) on the same x64 OS. They will happily co - exist but the x86 version will not utilise all the ram it can access like the x64 version will. Also any x86 software will run on a WoW64 layer. Which may add a small performance penalty.

You might want to avoid installing the x64 version of Studio One if...

1. You do not have more than 4GB of ram or even less ram. You would still be able to run an x64 OS and run the x64 version of Studio One on it but with 4GB or less it may be better to use an x86 OS and the x86 version of Studio One

2. You have a large collection of x86 plugins and do not want to use bridging or similar solutions to get them to work in Studio One x64. The best option would be to run the x86 version of Studio One on an x64 OS alongside the x64 version.

3. You have no real need or see no real benefit in using Studio One with x64 plugs in general.

Will my x86 plugins work in the x64 version of Studio One?
Studio One Pro x64 does not currently host x86 plugins You could try using the popular Jbridge. It is not officially supported though.

Any plugins with x64 versions?
NI, Spectrasonics, Voxengo, PSP e.t.c already have x64 versions of there plugins to name a few, more will be continually added as time goes on. Check your chosen plug ins website to see what versions are currently available.
