If you don't like to use the pattern editor to draw in your patterns, then maybe you would like to try to use it strictly for the use of automation. You can use one track for your midi event and duplicate that track and use that one for the pattern editor that can hold a combination of automating parameters under different variations or use the different variation to host different automation ideas for the same parameter.
