This is a video from a youtuber from Poland, who compiled a performance test of various DAWs, including Studio One. Haven't seen anything like this anywhere else so it might be useful for Studio One users and for developers as well, because performance issues were raised here many, many times.

Seasoned S1 users will probably know what the results are, they are presented at 9:05 mark. English subtitles are available.

I believe it means the "Dropout protection".

Well if that's the case with dropout protection is near the top, and without it is near the bottom.

Dropout protection really shouldn't be used unless there is some last resort issue.

So, real.world, not great results.

Out of curiosity I downloaded Samplitude demo, loaded my VST Instruments stack and started playing some notes.

Studio One - 256 samples buffer settings, no dropout protection - CPU load 15%, average DSP Load 25% (32% Peak) - runs smoothly without any glitches

Samplitude - the same 256 samples buffer - average DSP Load 35% (200% Peak), audible audio glitches and crackles

I have not had a problem with dropouts so have never even looked at this setting.

So what does this statement really mean? Mine is set to medium (maybe that's the default) and there seems to be no way to "not use dropout protection." I guess maybe you mean it should be set to "minimum?" Or maybe there is an "off" setting somewhere that I haven't found. I'm sure there is a thread somewhere about all this.

Whatever the lowest setting is, that's the best option if you have no issues. I believe the lowest setting is effectively off but you'll have to ask Presonus for confirmation on whether I'm right or not. It's not particularly intuitive.

I have observed many plugins misbehave with dropout protection , if you have no issues it's best on the lowest setting for any easy life, with this turned on I and others have had nothing but issues. If you don't have issues then good for you. If you need to use it, then you need to use it, I suggest you avoid it otherwise.
