Serious question from a technomoron:

My 1/2 Terabyte SSD has only 60 GB left. Does S1v6 simply write over v5.5.2, or is it an entirely new addition, in which case I don't have enough room?

Also, can I assume that my S1 song files done on v5.5.2 will still be there if v6.1.2 writes over v5.5.2? :?:

60 GB!? Studio One needs not more than 400 MB for an installation! It's extremely lightweight. Everything else is just optional Soundsets or other content that you can install additionally (later).

Does S1v6 simply write over v5.5.2, or is it an entirely new addition, in which case I don't have enough room?

During the installation it asks you where you want to install Studio One 6. I have my 5.5.2 installation in C:\Program Files\PreSonus\Studio One 5.5.2 and version 6 in ...\PreSonus\Studio One 6. Just choose a different folder. You will still be able to run and use Studio One 5.5.2.

Yes, the installation does not affect the user data folder. You can find your songs for your v5 installation by going into the Studio One options, then choose Locations -> User Data. Here you see the User Data Location that contains the "Songs" folder with all your songs.

If you install Studio One 6 and it won't display your existing songs, this means that the User Data Location is not yet set in the Options. Then you need to do that manually. But usually Studio One takes over the settings from a previous installation.

You certainly won't have any issues intalling S1 v6. You also won't have a problem with the install over writing your songs. With that, you'd want to start expanding on that 60 gbytes for future use. That's putting your available space at 5% so think about adding a 1 Tbyte or larger external drive.

Adding the drive will solve your second question as well because while the install should be just fine. Would you risk your many hours of work, on a question to a forum if it will all be alright? Computers are complex, yet largely reliable devices with still some margin of error. With all we can say "should be fine", still doesn't cover some potentially bad software you loaded, corrupt file allocation tables, or that unexpected bolt of lightening hitting your house when you thought the UPS was working just fine.

If nothing else, and your heart is set on installing Studio One ver. 6, just PLEASE backup your songs to a different drive and buy a new SSHD soon. Remember to free up your C drive as well.
That and look at the info already given.

Enjoy v6. It has a few basic but noteworthy new features. I'm finding track presets and the parallel splitter (ease of it, anyway) the most useful features. 👌

Hey, I appreciate all the replies!

I decided to keep things as is on my bedroom computer, and just buy a new computer for my basement system (1 Terabyte SSD, 32 GB RAM, Windows Pro replacing a 256 GB mechanical HD, 4GB RAM, Windows XP) and making the new basement system my main "dawg."

I can now put EVERYTHING on to the new S16 system with no worries, in addition to no worries installing a whole lot of 3rd party plugins and a bunch of other programs.

With regard to my 60GB-remaining bedroom system, I've read that you should always leave 15 to 20% of your HD free or you could run into performance problems. And trust me, I got rid of everything on that drive that I could but was still left with only 60GB.So I concluded the best policy would be to let it go as is, still use it as is, but make the new basement system my primary workstation.

Yes, I do back up regularly to an external SSD. :punk:
